ROME (spoilers)

premieres Sunday August 28 on HBO.

Anyone have any scoop?
Could it possibly be as good as BBC's I CLAUDIUS?

Rome, T.
From the looks of it maybe it's about the Fall of Rome, but you will notice I asked if anyone has any scoop.

Sian Phillips' performance as Livia made an impression that will never grow dim in my memory. Loved her on Broadway as MARLENE.

re: ROME

Sian Phillips was also a stunning Madame Armfeldt in the National's 'Little Night Music' a few years ago. Wonderful to watch.

Wish I could have seen that. I actually checked in to my hotel in London the afternoon of closing night but I just didn't even try to get a ticket.

I still think her Livia is one of the greatest performances ever on the small screen.

re: ROME

'I Claudius' ranks as one of the all-time greats of British Drama. Derek Jacobi is always on cracking form. He's terrific in a recent BBC production called 'The Long Firm' - don't know if it's made it over to the US yet, but it's a brilliant drama. And another reason for watching is the beautiful Mark Strong.

And that production of 'Night Music' with Dench I shall never forget - sublime.

re: ROME

Will look for "The Long Firm".

Also loved Margaret Tyzack in "I Claudius".
I got to see her live on Broadway with Maggie Smith in "Lettice and Lovage".

Really got me back into looking this up again. This was always a great treat when it was televised. I get really PO'd when they televise endless repeats of terrible 'Sit-Com's over here and the real ground-breaking series never get another airing. This is what the BBC has always done best.

Oh, God, Margaret Tyzack and Susan Hampshire in THE FIRST CHURCHILLS. Or Hampshire as Fleur in The Forsythe Saga. Or THE GREAT AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE. Do they program these classics on PBS anymore? No, we get Doo-wop concerts or awful Josh Groban drivel or Sarah Brightman or...ugh!

re: ROME

I am still looking forward to this HBO mini series.
It might be good as BBC is involved.

re: ROME

Interested in seeing ROME, too.

As for the older PBS classics, it appears the only way to see them is on DVD or VHS.

Favorites of mine include

THE PALLISERS (terrific)
I, CLAUDIUS
THE FORSYTE SAGE (original b&w)
VANITY FAIR
UPSTAIRS, DOWNSTAIRS
TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS
