I can't wait. I love this show. I wish it would have been carried for a few more seasons. I don't know know what they are thinking when they pull a show like Carnivale and Deadwood.

Old episodes on now.

re: rome

I wanted to love this series....BUT

aside from Brilliant production design- did the writers even read Roman history? They're rewriting history so much they should work for Fox News.

Example: Servilia was Caesar's lover till his death. She was a staunch anti-Catoist and would NEVER have done anything to support Pompey or undermine Caesar. And Caesar was tall, blond, balding and beautiful according to ancient texts- not a scary looking, short, stocky brunett.

If you have A LOT of time on your hands, read Colleen McCullough's MASTERS OF ROME series. Astonishing work, VERY long but worthy. She brings ROME to life in a way that is not John Jakes meets Jackie Collins...

Still, I'll watch ROME season two as I have a weak spot for Kvein McKidd. A girl can dream....

re: rome

I look forward to reading MASTERS OF ROME when I finish George's MEMOIRS OF CLEOPATRA.

Interesting about Servilia, Sue.
What about her relationship with Attia?

Edit to fix the spelling of Attia and Servilia.

re: rome

They had a story about ROME in the magazine section of last weeks Sunday Times

It is a shame it is going off. I thought with the expense of building the set it would stay longer. I guess producing it is quite expensive. They apparently broke the bank for the Sopranos so this went along with Deadwood. Once the Sopranos goes, HBO 2 other quality series will be gone

re: rome

Glebb, Attia is not a prominent character- and is far from the Joan Collins BC the series made her.

If you recall creepy Cato, one of Pompey's adherents- he was the result of a coupling with a servant. He and Servilia were siblings by marriage and she despised him for not being of noble birth.

Brutus's wife, Porcia/Portia was MUCH more like the Attia in the series.

The first book is a bit slow- but they do pay off. I had to have a cheat sheet of who was who with actors names beside them at first, the way I did when reading Chekov and Tolstoy in high school...

Thanks SueSnell (I'm here on the Lord's work Mrs. Snell.)

I'm going to read "Cesar's Way" after Cleo and then hopefully on to "Masters of Rome".

re: rome

I'm a junior in a very rigorous private high school, and I'm currently in my 5th year of Latin (essentially the AP course). When we were freshmen, we watched "I, Claudius", and it's become a tradition for the kids in Latin II to watch it. This year, since "Rome" came out on DVD, our teacher thought it would be GREAT for us. Unfortunately, she hadn't seen any episodes or read anything about the full-frontal nudity or the horrific bloodbaths.

Despite her initial reaction, we're still watching the show in 40 minute installments every Friday. I love it. We still mock it (an ode to Mystery Science Theatre 3000), and our teacher loves to point out little inaccurasies. For example: Romans would never crucify Roman citizens, because they thought that way to be punished/die was barbaric.

Does anyone with the DVD set turn on the educational subtitles? They're hilarious.

re: rome

With Caesar gone, one of the main characters & heart of the show is gone. The other actors will need to pick up the slack big time

Ugh! Still not being broadcast here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, though. If not I'll have to resort to dvd. This fella was sitting at the next table to us the other evening. He's playing Trofimov in a stunning producton of 'The Cherry Orchard'. He looks VERY cute in his geeky specs. I enjoyed his performance, too, as Irwin in the tour of 'The History Boys' a few months ago.

re: rome

Is anyone still watching this?

I thought last night's episode was good. Although I think they are starting to overdo the sex. It just seems gratuitous now.

I'm curious about what people think of this season. Is it true this is the last one?
