re: rome

The question is how they will hold it together without Caesar's presence.

They do have 2 strong characters but will probably introduce more when it comes back.I am not kidding but James Gandolfini would be good in some role & not stunt casting

Just finished putting episode 12 on DVD so now I have all 12 plus a 1/2 hour special About Rome all on 2 DVD'S. Ain't life great ?

re: rome

I think Antony and Brutus are EASILY poised to take over the central role, along with Octavian when he finally comes into his own. I mean, we still have Vorenus and Pullo. The problem I see more than losing Caesar is losing Niobe - she was the real heart of the show - the one main character other than Vorenus really, who I would truly want to know in real life (and even Vorenus wasn't exactly the nicest guy). Was she perfect? No, but she WAS the emotional female center of the show -- the other women are all conniving and manipulative - not that we don't love them for it, but there has to be a new character to take Niobe's place, and I somehow don't think it's going to be Eirene...

re: rome

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them at the inn.

I can deal with one more season of ROME.
I was happy with just one. They managed to cover a lot.

If people are hungry for more they should rent the 1976 BBC series I CLAUDIUS. It's not as slick as the newer ROME mini series but it's wonderful and Sian Phillips is outrageous.

Glebby, 'I, Claudius' is being re-run at the moment on BBC4. Fantastic. and Yay for Sian. Stunning.

re: rome

I bought the video version years ago. Sian is so funny/evil!
Since I've given up my VCR I will need to buy the DVD set.
Loved 'Riot' btw.

re: rome

(Glad about 'Riot') John Hurt is terrific, too. Jacobi is such a gifted actor. He's at the Donmar at the moment in 'Voyage Around My Father'.

Might get 'Rome' on dvd. Great fun to watch. 'Dynasty with swords' I thought.

I can't wait. I love this show. I wish it would have been carried for a few more seasons. I don't know know what they are thinking when they pull a show like Carnivale and Deadwood.

re: rome

I wanted to love this series....BUT

aside from Brilliant production design- did the writers even read Roman history? They're rewriting history so much they should work for Fox News.

Example: Servilia was Caesar's lover till his death. She was a staunch anti-Catoist and would NEVER have done anything to support Pompey or undermine Caesar. And Caesar was tall, blond, balding and beautiful according to ancient texts- not a scary looking, short, stocky brunett.

If you have A LOT of time on your hands, read Colleen McCullough's MASTERS OF ROME series. Astonishing work, VERY long but worthy. She brings ROME to life in a way that is not John Jakes meets Jackie Collins...

Still, I'll watch ROME season two as I have a weak spot for Kvein McKidd. A girl can dream....

I look forward to reading MASTERS OF ROME when I finish George's MEMOIRS OF CLEOPATRA.

Interesting about Servilia, Sue.
What about her relationship with Attia?

Edit to fix the spelling of Attia and Servilia.
