wtf is this pandering, propagandist bs?

Posted: 3/23/12 at 10:06amI guess I didn't see it the same way as you. The only thing that bothered me was the amount of makeup she was wearing while in uniform. It was very Private Benjamin.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 10:26amI don't see anything wrong with it. I am sure there are a lot of military folks who would appreciate it. I like the message.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 10:48amMostly I was stirring the sh!t, but I really do find her to be the hackiest of hacks. It's bad enough that she joins up because of a guy, without going into the ra-ra military aspect.

I didn't see it so much as "ra-ra military" as "ra-ra women in the military". At any rate, I'll take this song and video over Madonna's Gang Bang any day.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 11:14amWell, you don't, I guess, but Katie's kind of know for her bodacious tatas and I am sure they would get in the way. Running with big boobs is damn near hell.

I rolled my eyes at the whole thing, she breaks up with someone so she goes to the military? Really? And yes, I totally got the PRIVATE BENJAMIN vibe during some of it but something about the whole concept and seeing soldiers in battle to promote a completely forgettable pop song from one very trashy, hardly talented singer just rubbed me the wrong way.
I think the part where she binds her boobs and all that was trying to recall the American version of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. It's funny how they make her look like Rooney Mara at some points, like Zooey Deschanel at others (during the flashbacks), she has no personality of her own, ugh.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 1:12pmThe video isn't bad, the song merely okay, but the most objectionable thing about the whole exercise is the practice of re-releasing records with a few mediocre songs tacked on at the end just to milk a few extra dollars out of the fans whilst simultaneously keeping yourself in the limelight while you ready your next album. (That was a long, clumsy sentence...)

I totally agree. Same with cast recordings. We have three different releases of Once, two with different bonus tracks. And this is all at the same time, not even re-releases.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 2:56pmI don't have a problem when a well established artist with a lot of albums under his or her best releases a greatest hits and tacks a couple of new singles on the end. Katy Perry doesn't fit my definition of that sort of artist.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 9:19pmI still don't get why the gays love her, and she gets a free pass for her extremist religious past and the pretty offensive lyrics of her first single You're So Gay (even if, as she claims, she means it in the insulting way).

This re-release is not a greatest hits. It's just an updated version of the TEENAGE DREAM album.
Katy Perry is a big guilty pleasure of mine. She's fun, quirky, and actually DOES have talent - check out her acoustic EP for proof. I'll take her any day over Lady Gaga who is self-absorbed, egotistical, and so desperate to prove that she's an 'artist.'

Posted: 3/23/12 at 10:08pmOh come on--Katy Perry is self absorbed as well (and her complaints about Gaga using sacrilegious imagery is just goofy)

Really? I honestly think she is one of the least self-absorbed performers out there.
Someone who does an entire video dressed like this just does not strike me as being self-absorbed.
Or this
Katy Perry has always been about *fun*.

Posted: 3/23/12 at 10:18pmPhyllis, i never thought i'd be the one sticking up for her but the only reference to a guy in i kissed a girl is 'hope my boyfriend don't mind it', this would mean she was cheating and he did not know about it.

Posted: 3/24/12 at 2:30amEven if 'I Kissed A Girl' doesn't specifically say it's about experimenting with girls to turn men on, I think it would be hard to deny that Katy was aiming to appeal to men when she recorded the song and made the video. "It's not what good girls do" is one of the more irritating lines in the song. What's most problematic about it for me is that society deems it just fine for Katy to go all faux homo, but frank songs about actual gay love and lust don't get radio play. When Katy was called on this, she pulled out the "people are just looking for something to be offended by" defense. Then a year or so later, Katy got bent out of shape about Gaga's Alejandro video. It always sucks when the shoe is on the other foot, doesn't it?

Oh heck no. I HATED I Kissed A Girl. It seemed WAY too important to her to point out that it was just a silly thing. "You're my experimental game" and "Ain't no big deal, it's innocent" just annoyed the piss out of me. (I had to google the lyrics, as I scream at the radio when it comes on.) It's just one more thing to make young girls think it's silly and just goofing off and make it even more difficult for young gay girls to understand what the difference is. Bah.
And I get that this isn't a greatest hits album. That's my point. If it was, it would be different. This is just getting fans to fork over more money for the same album.

Posted: 3/24/12 at 4:30amTo be a great pop performer you HAVE to be self sbsorbed. I just colour her history with what I know of her past--obviouslusly chapters could be written about my favorites so I think anyone who loves Katy is fine--it's superb pop production by a standard vocalist and that's good.

All this talk of a song that is almost 5 years old. Should we ignore the great message of FIREWORK?

Posted: 3/24/12 at 9:13pmmr.widwest you are aware that music videos have directors, correct? And that they are ultimately the ones who have the concept for the video and not the singer, at least when the singer is as new as katy was when i kissed a girl came out

Why does that matter? Katy failed as a Christian artist, so she went the sex up route. She has to take some responsibility for the message she puts out there. Somebody else might have been pulling the strings, but she went along with it.
