Posted: 3/24/12 at 9:59pmBecause you were at least making it seem like you thought she was pulling the strings on that video, something that would be very very wrong to assume. Again, we all know what happens when one goes against a directors in this business especially for a new artist then you get that pretty little 'difficult' label. I'm not saying it was right for her to make that switch i have a problem with blaming people for things they did not do.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 2:55amI don't really understand what message she has to take responsibility for. I don't take her seriously. I don't know anyone who does. She's just a fun artist. And so what if she is a former Christian artist? Most Christian musicians seem to be people who failed at mainstream pop. I came from a Southern Baptist upbringing and for years wanted to go into the ministry. Do I need to take responsibility for something?

Posted: 3/25/12 at 9:29amThe heteronormative slant of Ur So Gay and my previously explained issues with I Kissed a girl would be some of my problems with what she's sent out into the cultural stratosphere. I brought up her history as a Christian musician because she switched from that persona to cynically sprucing herself up as a pop tart for fame.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 11:04amWell, again, I just don't take her seriously. Those were two early releases when I just dismissed her entirely. She's grown on me a little since then. She has never done anything that makes me think anyone should take her too seriously. It's just like how I can't allow myself to get too worked up when a teenager I don't know says something is "so gay." It's moronic, but for some reason it's acceptable in their world.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 11:22amI get where you're coming from, Jersey. I'm not going to deny that she puts out some catchy tunes. I'm just put off by her as a person.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 6:35pmShe has great pop producers behind her--no question. I just find her, as a person, kinda repulsive.

She does have great producers, though they have pushed her into a more bubblegum sound over the years. At heart, she is absolutely a cross between Alanis Morissette and Gwen Stafani. She is not a belter like Gaga, and I think she owns that. She does write all of her own music (some songs solely by her, most with co-writers, just like the majority of Gaga's music).
JerseyGirl completely gets it. Katy doesn't want to be taken too seriously. She's purposely silly, goofy, and fun.
In my opinion, this is the REAL Katy Perry.

Ljay we rarely disagree, so none of this is meant personally. Nearly every pop princess (Britney may be the exception) takes a songwriting credit--for me that's not an issue--pop music for too long has had to live by "rockist" attitudes that somehow to be a legit pop act you have to at least co-write your own stuff. Bull****--pop music has thrived on great songwriters and producers for ages. I saw Katy prry live on her last tour and her vocals were WRETCHED--I mean she made Madonna sound brilliant. The woman can not sing--tie this up to a false, cruel personality, and it's not someone I'd want to support (regardless of her obvious homophobia combined with gay pandering).
I wish she WERE more like the goofy image she tries to carry off, but she's just unpleasant.

I don't think we are going to agree on this, and that's fine. You certainly have a right to your opinion about Katy!
BUT, I just don't think a staunch homophobe would have two men kiss in her FIREWORK video, which is basically like her BORN THIS WAY.
I am a gay activist and I say that proudly. I voted no on Prop 8 [California’s Nov. 4, 2008 amendment declaring that marriage is definied as a union solely between a man and a woman], of course. I’ve come a long way from where I was raised, and I think specifically I realized that when I moved out of my home and I started meeting lots of different types of people – all kinds of different people; it doesn’t matter what their sexual orientation [is]. I’ve always been very open-minded person, but I definitely believe in equality. - Katy Perry
Also, she rarely sounds good on tour with all of the theatrics. But seriously, watch all of her unplugged videos. She's most comfortable singing with her guitar and her band. She sound really good in those videos.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 8:25pmThat's fine, and whether I believe it or not, I do respect that she has been vocal with gay support. You're a theatre fan though, and so should know the theatrics argument doesn't hold weight--Kylie Minogue had even more elaborate concerts and sings 100% live with no real vocal shortcoming. But I admit she sounds good in your link--and a lot of my dislike for Katy is completely biased--she just rubs me the wrong way. But maybe I should just hang myself with my H&M scarf.

Posted: 3/25/12 at 9:21pm^Thought i should also include part of the reason she sounds so different is she has to sing the songs in a lower key than in the studio on tour simply because the original arrangements are just too high. So on awards shows and the like when she has to do it in the studio key...

I don't know why everyone is so upset. In 3 years she will be playing gay prides, casinos and chili cook-offs. Her clock is ticking and that horrid video was her jumping the shark.
She needs to have a chat with Taylor Dayne, Belinda Carlisle and Roxette. They can tell her what to expect.

Here's my thoughts:
Katy Perry is not meant ot do trashy dance music and wear edgy costumes like Gaga or Nicki Minaj. I think if her albums start heading towards a rock sensibility, it will give her more longevity and show that she isn't nearly as annoying. Her music isn't anything new (though I adore Firework and The One That Got Away) and it always seems like she's trying too hard to be popular. If she takes a break and tries making more mature music, she'll be more of a critical success.
Everyone nowadays is trying to be like Lady Gaga: Nicki Minaj, Christina Aguilera, Katy, Rihanna, even Beyonce. Britney is edgy without being bizarre, and Christin and Beyonce still can do very classy stuff. It works for Gaga because it's her style and it works for Nicki because her music is also nucking futs. Christina tried hard to do he edgy/future thing with "Bionic," and look what happened. If these artists try to be more like themselves and not worry about spectacle, it might help them in the long run.
Of course, this will never happen. Nor will my Lady Gaga standards, Beyonce smooth jazz, and Britney Spears rock and blues albums.
