Remember the candlelight vigils for 9/11?

I love the idea, and will send out emails to people I know...
BUT... a couple of things.
Most people who have day jobs aren't home by 5:00 pm. And it's still pretty much broad daylight at that time...
DP, why not set a later time to give people a chance to get home and for it to get darker outside?
Also, we are talking about TOMORROW night, correct? And not tonight?

Yes, DD. As I learned the hard way, I managed to miss one sentence and lit a candle tonight. I'm leaving it, though, because I see no harm in honoring the moment two nights in a row. (The attacks did happen early in the morning.)
And yes, I don't know what the light is like for you guys in the upper Northeast, but 5pm is still VERY bright here in the Southeast. Dusk is around 8 these days.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 8:46pmOkay, let's make the lighting at 7:30 PM in whatever time zone you are in. If you have to do it earlier (I am trying to find a mass or community prayer service to attend tomorrow night) or later, that's okay.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 9:21pmThat year we lit candles too in New Jersey - our street had one in front of every door - mine was out on the steps. These things are coming back so clearly to me - Thank you, Dolly pop - I will be lighting my candle at 7:30 and I'll tell my friends to do it. I don't know how I'm gojng to hold together tomorrow morning around 8 o'clock. I can't believe it - it's like time evaporates right around this date and there were no intervening years.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 11:03pmThe prayerthat was mentioned earlier.........The Mourner's KAddish is a prayer that is said for ayear following the death of a family member in the Jewish religion. I think it is an excellent choice for this purpose because it really doesn't mention death. In fact, the whole emphasis for this prayer is to sanctify life. Again it is said during the year following a death and on the anniversary of a death.

Posted: 9/11/06 at 8:32amThis is an amazing idea, and a great way to pay tribute. I so wish I could do it, but as I'm in a dorm room, I'm not allowed to have candles at all. Can anyone think of a way I could still somehow do something?

ashley, I don't know what you can do- I'll keep thinking.
But, if you want me to, I can light a candle for you also when I get home from class at 7:00

Posted: 9/11/06 at 8:37amAshley....maybe you can find a church and just go in and light a candle....doesn't matter if it's not the church you belong to...it's the intention that matters.

Thank you, Sweet Q. It is much appreciated.
ETA: As lame as it sounds, I literally just drew a picture of a candle and taped it in my window with the words "never forget". Now, I'm on the 13th floor so I don't know if anyone can see it, but that's not the point, right?

You're welcome Ashley.
And whether somebody can see it or not, it doesn't matter. It's that you did it and it's just like lighting a candle. And it matters to you- which is really what counts.

I just put my candle in the window the best way I could...I don't have naything in fron of them, so I had to place it on the table near it, but it can be seen from outside...
I am still so affected by that day...

This may be a first:
I made sausage and peppers for dinner tonight.
I then lit the memorial candle in my front window and recited the Kaddish that was printed on this thread.
Then out of habit, I finished the prayer by making the Sign of the Cross. Before I realized what I was doing, it was too late.
Does the Kaddish count if it's recited by a pork-eating Catholic?

Dp- I think it's the thought that counts.
Because if it's not the thought- then you're in deep doo-doo.
