As I'm reading the posts about 9/11, I am recalling that on the old Broadway.Com message boards, we organized a solidarity gesture a few days after the attacks. We encouraged everyone to leave a lighted candle in their front window on that Friday evening. We chose Friday because of the Jewish custom of lighting Sabbath candles on that night.
I don't know whether we were the originators of the idea, or whether we were just a part of several groups who came up with the idea at the same time. It was an extremely widespread observance, though.
Tomorrow night marks the 5th anniversary of the attacks. Why don't we light candles in our windows again to show sympanthy for those who lost their lives 5 years ago.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 5:59pmJews also light a memorial candle on the anniversary of a family member's death. We do it at sundown the night before and let it burn for 24 hrs. They make special candles for this and can usuqlly be found in the Kosher food aisle. I think I will light one tonight.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 6:12pmMy family has done this every year, but we usually just light one, large candle and sit outside for about half an hour. This year we'll do the same!

This is going to sound silly but, it's just a general candle- nothing specific- right?

Posted: 9/10/06 at 7:31pmAny sort of candle will do. If they're enclosed in glass (like the memorial candles) they are a bit safer.

Will this be a synchronized vigil? Do we all light the candle at the same time? How is this going to work?

Posted: 9/10/06 at 7:37pmI'm going to suggest we light the candles at 5 PM, regardless of the time zone you're in. If you don't make it home for 5 PM, light the candle whenever you can.

Posted: 9/10/06 at 7:39pmShould we say a prayer when we light our candles? If someone could post the Jewish prayer for the dead (in English), that might be appropriate.

So, people in the east coast light their candles promptly at 5PM, and people in the west coast light theirs three hours later?
ETA: For those secular individuals (like myself), we can hold a Silent Moment of Remembrance.

MOURNER'S KADDISH
An English Translation
Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.
May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.
Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.
May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.
He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

These are the words in hebrew and then English translation
Yitgadal V'yit'kadash Shmei Rabah --
May the Great Name, through our expanding awareness and our fuller action, lift Itself to become still higher and more holy;
May our names, along with all the names of all the beings in the universe, live within the Great Name;
May the names of all whom we can no longer touch but who have touched our hearts and lives, remain alight within our memories and in the Great Name;
May the names of all who have died in violence and war be kept alight in our sight and in the Great Name, with sorrow that we were not yet able to shape a world in which they would have lived.
May the Great Name, bearing ALL these names, live within each one of us;
(Cong: Amein)
B'alma di vra chi'rooteh v'yamlich malchuteh b'chayeichun, u'v'yomeichun, u'v'chayei d'chol beit yisrael, b'agalah u'vzman kariv, v'imru: --
May Your Great Name lift Itself
still higher and more holy
throughout the world that You have offered us,
a world of majestic peaceful order
that gives life to the Godwrestling folk
through time and through eternity ----
And let's say, Amein (Cong: Amein)
Y'hei sh'mei rabbah me'vorach
l'olam almei almaya.
So therefore may the Great Name be blessed, through every Mystery and Mastery
of every universe.
Yitbarach, v'yishtabach, v'yitpa'ar, v'yitromam, v'yitnasei, v'yithadar, v'yit'aleh, v'yithalal -- Shmei di'kudshah, -- Brich hu, (Cong: Brich Hu) >
May the Great Name be blessed and celebrated, Its beauty honored and raised high; may It be lifted and carried,
may Its radiance be praised in all Its Holiness –-- Blessed be!
L'eylah min kol bir'chatah v'shir'atah tush'be'chatah v'nechematah, de'amiran be'alma, v'imru: Amein (Cong: Amein)
Even though we cannot give You enough blessing, enough song, enough praise, enough consolation
to match what we wish to lay before You –
And though we know that today there is
no way to console You
when among us some who bear Your Image in our being
are slaughtering others
who bear Your Image in our being.
Yehei Shlama Rabah min Shemaya v'chayyim aleinu v'al kol Yisrael, v'imru Amein.
Still we beseech that from the unity of Your Great Name flow great harmony and joyful life for the Godwrestling folk;
(Cong: Amein)
Oseh Shalom bi'm'romav, hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu v'al kol yisrael v'al kol yishmael v'al kol yoshvei tevel -- v'imru: Amein.
You who make harmony
in the ultimate reaches of the universe,
teach us to make harmony
within ourselves, among ourselves --
and peace for the Godwrestling folk,
the people Israel;
for the children of Ishmael;
and for all who dwell upon this planet.
(Cong: Amein)
Oseh Shalom bi'm'romav, hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu v'al kol yisrael v'al kol yishmael v'al kol yoshvei tevel -- v'imru: Amein.

If you're a secular person, how about a moment of silent reflection followed by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Sound good?
I like the idea that this will start on the East Coast and continue across out country until it end on the West Coast 3 hours later.

On one hand I'd say yes but I'm sure they could think of something on their own.
I mean, if your not a regular poster, it would kind of be strange, don't you think??
If someone joined BWW today and posted that, it would kind of be odd, IMO.

i'll light one tomarrow. i have to buy one of those memory candles. the ones we have are in plastic and go in a special holder on my grandfather's grave but i dont trust the plastic around it without being in the holder... i'll buy a glass one.
also some places are holding special masses tomarrow night to honor police officers, emergency medical workers and firefighters. the church next to our firehouse always holds on for our department on 9/11.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Okay. Wow - that's what I get for not reading. I kind of assumed that since the attacks happened so early in the morning you guys were talking about tonight, not tomorrow.
I feel a little silly now, but I think I'll leave the candle anyway.
EDIT - I have more candles. I can still light one tomorrow.
