The only reputable musical theatre programs are going to be university based. Like NYU, Northwestern and Oklahoma City University. These are the big ones but they are selective and many don't get in. But hey..that's the real world.
If you want to do a little show and go swimming and ride a horse, then you need to check out some of the other ideas. If there's a horse attached to a summer camps, chances are it's more "fun" than "serious".

These are only for students who've completed their junior year. Any good ones for younger students?
Interlochen arts camp. It's in Michigan and has a great reputation. Lots of Broadway people have gone there. I think the website is www.interlochen.org, though I could be wrong.
How is the 3 week workshop at interlochen? And is it in a good location?

A very fun and exciting learning enviroment/kick ass place to spend the summer (in my opinion) is Long Lake Camp for the Arts.
While it's not the most well known, it is a great learning enviroment and an awesome place to be (as I've said before.)
Check it out: www.longlakecamp.com
I know several people who have gone to Interlochen, one went for the summer and ended up staying for his entire senior year. I have only heard positive things about it. It's up north somewhere but I don't know where. All the pictures I have seen were beautiful.
The Oklahoma City University program is for freshmen through graduating high school seniors. It is a real musical theater program from a big musical theater university. Without a doubt, on of the best in the US.

Yeah, I did the 3-week program at Interlochen 2 summers ago. It was the first year of the program and they hadn't really figured out exactly what it was yet, but I would definitely say go for the 6-week program. In the 3-week program it's more about learning technique and stuff like that, and then you put together a musical revue. The 6-week program you just do a show. So it depends on what you are looking to get out of it, but from personal experience, I think the 6-week program works better, unless they worked out some kinks from the 3-week program.
Oh, and Interlochen is in Michigan. It is really pretty, but the weather can kind of suck. It's either extremely hot and muggy or like, rain showers. But if you're thinking about applying to U of M, they LOVE to see that you went to Interlochen on your resume.
Which reminds me, U of M has a summer program too, that is supposed to be excellent.
OCU looks good, but I'm in DE and I'm not quite ready to go all the way out to Oklahoma yet. Has anyone heard anything about Broadway Artists Alliance? If you major in acting or singing, how much dancing do you have to do? Because I really cannot dance. AT ALL.
Also, are there any other college programs out there open to students younger than 16?
If you can't dance, where better place to learn! I think Carnegie Mellon has a summer program, and you don't have to audition for it, just pay. But it is supposed to be really good. I don't know what the age cutoff is.

Interlochen is AMAZING. They also have a year round boarding school in which I have applied to.
If I were you I would still consider OCU. They have kids as young as 14 coming from all over the US and the world to OCU for their programs so their would be lots of people your age.
And it is a FANTASTIC program. They train you like crazy. And..you don't so some put together revue kinda show/musical. They do real shows. They did "Birdie" last year.
I wanted to go last year but was unable to because of a fmaily vacation. They also have a MySPace group that's fun - http://www.myspace.com/ocusummermusic

I am also a verterian of Long Lake Camp for the Arts and it was the best 4 summers of my life. If you want to go to a place where you can make friends for life and well as getting better at what you want to do, that is the place to go.
Can someone elaborate on OCU? What's a regular day like, etc.? Is it easy to make friends there?

Glad you're interested in Oklahoma City University's Summer Music Program. We do indeed have the High School Musical Theater Program! As we say, if you're serious about music, then OCU Summer Music is serious about you.
Our high school MT program brings students from all over the United States and the world to Oklahoma City University for our renowned pre-college training program. At our program, you gain the music training you need plus valuable stage experience.
Mornings and afternoons are spent in the class room taking music theory, acting, dance, scene study, diction, audition prep, piano and vocal master classes with OCU Bass School of Music voice professors.
Evenings are reserved for rehearsals of our fully staged musicals.
Auditions are required for admission to the program. Freshmen through graduating 07 seniors are welcome to apply. We present a friendly, creative environment where students can develop their MT skills under the guidance of our acclaimed OCU music faculty.
This year, due to the overwhelming number of applicants, we will be offering two high school musical theater sessions. We are also considering our musicals. If all goes well, we will be doing our OCU "Tony Summer" - presenting a recent Tony winning Broadway show and a current Tony winning Broadway show.
We also have a comprehensive scholarships and financial aid program. We offer special scholarships for students selected to participate in All-State, Boys/Girls State, National Merit Semi-Finalists and Finalists and those recognized by the NFAA ARTS Awards.
We also hold national auditions. We will hold our East Coast audition in Rochester, NY on November 27th. We also will be holding auditions in Houston and Ft. Worth in January 2007. Auditions will be held on the OCU campus on February 9th and 10th and February 23rd and 24th. To reserve an audition, visit our registration page at:

Has anyone heard anything about BOCO's summer vocal program?
SHOW CHOIR CAMPS OF AMERICA!!!!!!! In tiffin ohio at heidelberg college and in decatur Illinois! Even though it says SHOW CHOIR lol the training is top notch! Your basically there for 1 week and theres around 550 kids representing multiple states and countries. You arrive on Sunday and if you want to try out for dance ensemble, vocal jazz, talent show etc etc and then you have orientation. Your split into 8 different show choir groups of about 60-70 kids and you have to learn 4 numbers and dances within a week. Rehearsals are normally 2-3 hours in the morning and in the afternoon. The food is incredible...I mean they had a soup bar, ice cream, ribs, EVERYTHING!!!!! And then theres workshops after lunch!! There are vocal workshops, dance workshops ranging from hip-hop to jazz to Musical Theatre!! They have an auditioning workshop, music writing etc. Then every evening they they have some form of entertainment. Every year they bring in a BROADWAY STAR to talk to us and perform. Last year was DANNY GURWIN and this year it WAS HUGH PANARO who played phantom and Lestat on BWAY!!! They also bring in phil reno too!!! Then we have 3 dances one on monday, wed, and friday. And oooo yeah they have an awesome pro lighting system with lasers and stage lights and big huge sound systems I mean top notch. Then on saturday all 8 groups put on their show and dance and vocal jazz perform as well!! DEFF check it out its www.showchoircampsofamerica.com!
I agree 1000% with those that say that Oklahoma City University has the best summer musical theater camp. It is an amazing school and the summer camp is taught by the same professors who taught Kristin Chenoweth.
And I heard they are doing "Les Miz" this summer!! My fave show!! I am hoping to audition for them when their national auditions come to texas in January.
GO OCU !!!!!
If you're in the Cappies program and get selected to go to the Cappies International Theatre summer program, I suggest going to a different program, elsewhere. While CIT is fun, you don't learn a thing, and it isn't extremely reputable as far as I know. Just as a note.
jg4892,
i went to boco's vocal program this past summer and loved it. it was intense, i learned a lot, and it made for a great two weeks of my summer. only thing i would warn about is that i know of a few people who were in it this summer who thought that it was a really big musical theatre based camp but it's not. its very much classically focused. you have choir rehearsal every night for i think two hours and during the week you have classes on theory, sight singing, and diction (primarily italian). you also have a movement class during the week, for the first week you rehearse an opera scene and the second week is a musical theatre scene. and of course you also have performance class which was one of the highlights for me. throughout the two weeks there is a classical and musical theatre master class, guest recitals, and more. on the weekends there are planned activities for you, but you are pretty much free to go about boston. you also typically go see a show, this past summer we saw blue man group.
i can't say enough about this program. I LOVED IT!
Can anyone tell me how Circle in the Square's Summer Acting Program is?
