Finally the Supreme Court did something right.

"The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, for the first time in the nation's history, that individual Americans have the right to own guns for personal use, and struck down a strict gun control law in the nation's capital."

It's funny how those who believe everyone should have a gun point to the 2nd Amendment as though "arms" is defined by "guns", which it's really not. If the 2nd Amendment were taken so literally, then we would have the right to keep arsenals of grenades, rocket launchers, even weapons of mass destruction, all of which could be defined as "arms", but clearly, the government already limits what is defined as "arms", so why do guns have to be included? If we want to be so literal, why not limit everyone to be allowed muskets and cannons?

Joe - You just had to remove the subtle wordplay from my post, didn't you?

At any rate, I love how the use of fake hair causes one to lose their sunny disposition. Hair is serious, y'all.

I am engaged in a long, fruitless dialog with my cat about the possibility of adding a pug to the household. He is staunchly opposed to the right to bear pugs.

I have to echo Liverpool here (and I can't believe no one else has brought it up). The 2nd amendment clearly states:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

This means that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed only when there is a chance of there being a well regulated militia. When there is no chance for said militia (and there is none in this country anymore) it should be up to the states to govern gun laws.

THAT SAID: I am not against owning all guns. I think hunting is an important part of the ecology of many parts of this country (example: Humans have destroyed almost all of the animals that hunt deer. Without a population control the deer ruin local ecologies. Therefore it is up to humans to control the deer population.)

While I am staunchly opposed to guns, I've done some research into the writings and statements of our founders with respect to gun ownership, and everything I've read indicates that they were unanimously in favor of an individual's right to arms.

But what is infuriating is that Scalia et al are supposedly strict constructionists, and oppose "activist judges" yet they seemed to freely ignore the part of the second amendment that references a well regulated militia when discussing the second amendment.

If they are so strict, then the second amendment should only apply to those guns in existence at the time it was drafted, as opposed to those created later...

I find him very intellectually dishonest.
