re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

I also discovered that Roddy use to have Friday Night Gourmet Parties with Vincent Price. They use to have them once a week at Roddy's the next week at Vincent's and so on. They both were good cooks and use to throw these parties for their friends. I know someone who use to know Vincent Price and apparently Roddy and Vincent were good friends.

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

I've heard a couple mentions over the past day or so about Heston being present at Roddy's dinner parties. I am not sure why I am so surprised to hear this unless its because Roddy was so liberal and Heston was so conservative.

I am fascinated with this era because its something we don't see anymore. Stars like this do not exist and the class and social events back then don't even compare as they did then.

In Lauren Bacall's updated By Myself, she talks about McDowall's dinner parties.

Really? Thats great! I have her book somewhere, I'll have to check it out. I still need to pick up Doris Robert's book at some used bookstore. I guess she has some great stories as well. I have a friend who knew Vincent Price and Basil Rathbone. I need to visit with him with a tape recorder and have him dish on telling some stories. Thanks NMartin!

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

There is a small bit of info on Roddy's parties, but LOTS of pics in the Vincent Price biography "Vincent Price: A Daughter's Biography" by Victoria Price.

Heston wasn't always a conservative. He used to be a Democrat but he said they got to be TOO liberal for him so he switched.

Frankly I don't think it would have mattered anyway to Roddy. He probably enjoyed having a mix of people with different viewpoints to make his parties more interesting. I think he just liked everyone - and everyone liked him.

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

I hear there is a new biography coming out about Roddy in 2009. Anyone have details? I hope they go into some detail about his social gatherings.

Just felt like bumping this.Watched Planet of the Apes and got thinking about Roddy and the 60's and 70's. Have not heard any details about this biography that was to come out this May. Must have been pushed back I guess.

There are many film museums in LA which feature photos of Mr. M and his parties. Apparently Maggie Smith said the parties were great but the food was bad. :) Maybe Vincent Price was not around that night.

One time a friend took me to the Beverly Hills Hotel, with the world's hottest pool boys [perhaps Levi Johnston should work there], and we saw Mr. M in a men's clothing store being fitted for a summer suit. A very classy-looking man.

I am surprised that the Academy never gave him an honorary Oscar for his contributions. I believe he won 1 Tony and was nommed for Camelot [one assumes he remained friends with Julie hence her party pic with Mr. M. and Greer Garson].

Isn't there something like diaries or a manuscript he left, but it's embargoed for a certain number of years after his death? It seems like it was a time frame such that the old guard involved would be dead by then.

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

I finally picked up Doris Robert's book at a flea market and she tells a great story about meeting Coral Brown.

I was at Roddy's where I met a woman who was to become a close friend of mine,Coral Brown, who was an actress married to Vincent Price. Coral was an elegant woman, always perfectly turned out and carefully coiffed, with tailored clothes and pearls. What continually delighted me about her was that, although she looked like a million bucks,it was just a front for a wicked sense of humor. One night at Roddy's,Coral told the story of a trip to Fortnumm and Mason's,one of London's premier department stores.A floorwalker approached her to ask if he could help her.

"What is your pleasure,Madam?"he asked.

"Fvcking and kite flying" she said drolly. "But today I am just looking for a pot of jam".

For anyone who has not read her book, I highly recommend it.

Tab Hunter had a rather lengthy relationship with Tony Perkins, not Roddy. He and Roddy just connected well as 'girlfriends' when they did some studio publicity together back in the day. Roddy generally seemed to respond to those with agile minds, and Tab's gifts were otherwise distributed.

Calling all girls, indeed. They were probably talking to each other.

Oh, my. I just watched one of those videos with Paul Newman in it (in nothing but tight white shorts!) That is absolute porn for me.

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

Yeah, I only Paul could pull off the white socks, dress loafers, jacket and sunglasses. It was a different time back then. I would love to hear what they were talking about.

re: Roddy McDowall's Dinner Party's

A few years ago, a museum in LA had an exhibit devoted to Mr. D. and his parties. Wonderful pics including one with him, Maggie Smith, and Dolly Parton {!}, all smiling.

From what I understand, everyone had fun and everyone left hungry as there was plenty of alcohol and never enough food. :)

I'm not sure. There are so many people who I can not place who look so damn familiar. In the first video, who is the guy with the watch at the 2:04 mark? Looks like Robert Walker's son(I know he is an actor but can not place his name. Not sure if that is him or not.)

I believe at the start of the Jane Fonda/Julie Andrews clip, there's a fantastic looking Tammy Grimes in a white one piece. Great clips!

Yes, that's Robert Walker, Jr. with Juliet Mills. The blond with Sal looks like Dennis Wilson, to me.
