Romney picks Ryan

I love the SNL speculations. They're taking up almost as much room as the real guys. :) I wouidn't mind if Hader went into politics. As Stefon, though.

The Republicans are no longer interested in seniors and minorities.

It's not about the middle anymore. It's all about energizing the respective bases--and de-energizing the opponent's base.

The Republicans aim to win this election by maximizing the turnout of their base and reducing the turnout of Obama's 2008 base.

I miss the middle.

The base doesn't like Romney, but if you think for a second they weren't going to turn out in force to get rid of Obama, you're crazy. Every Republican I know hates Romney. They all wanted Gingrich in the primaries. But their vote was never in doubt. They'd vote for Arlen Specter to get Obama out.

This election doesn't hinge on the bases of either side. It hinges on voting blocs and independents.

Paul Ryan was a bad choice.

I'd be very, very wary of discounting the Republican base. They were NOT going to come out at all for Romney. Many of the conservative talking heads were already looking toward 2016.

But they will come out for Romney/Ryan.

We have to be wary that this does not happen: They get near-100% voter participation for the Republican base, while the young people and independents fail to come out to the extent they came out in 2008. That's a serious danger here.

You are right. We have to make sure the youth vote gets out there. We REALLY have to make sure people get out and vote.Voter suppression is what they are relying on.I am hoping that now that we know who we are up against that Obama and the Democrats can re-energize our base more than the Republicans can.

Completely agree with PJ. I believe this pick was all about energizing the Republican base and guaranteeing a large voter turnout. Democrats shouldn't allow themselves to get too cocky or complacent. Because if you think this election is in the bag for Obama, you're woefully misguided.

What I don't understand is why the Dems aren't pounding away on the whole tax thing. They shouldn't let up for a second. No one likes paying taxes, and no one likes the idea of someone, especially someone wealthy, not paying their fair share. It's relatable and it's an easy message to get across.
ROMNEY... WHAT ARE YOU HIDING? RELEASE YOUR TAX RETURNS NOW!
#57

Romney picks Ryan

My theory on the tax returns is they are waiting til the conventions are over. All the media wants to discuss now is Romney's VP,Paul Ryan. Then comes the Republican Convention. The speeches and highlights and so on will be the focus. Then comes the Democratic Convention and the same there.

Once all that is over I predict/hope they hammer away on the Tax issue. If Ryan releases more than Romney, and he will have to,then it would be perfect to go after Romney on why his VP is willing to release more returns as well as his opponent and his VP. The Democrats need to show the American People that Romney feels he is above them all and that he does not have to play by the same rules as the others because he is privileged. They also need to ask, WTF is this man who wants to be President hiding?

Guaranteed that Ryan had to release more than 2 years of returns to be vetted as Romney's running mate. I was just watching This Week with George Stephanopoulos and George asked other Vice-Presidential hopeful, Tim Pawlenty, how many years of returns he had to release to Team Romney. It was fun watching him stammer his was to an answer... a bunch.

This election will be about taxes and Medicare and Social Security. There is a clear choice here. Inspite of what most people seem to think on this board, I do not believe for a second that Romney paid no taxes for ten years. By this time the Justice Department would be all over him. Plus most very wealthy people are audited when there are huge questions by the IRS.
He released last years. The rest are probably similar. But whether or not his and Ryan's plan is fair for everyone is the real question.

Look at it from their side. Is the spending sustainable? How do you grow the economy? It seems to me that we need more taxes from the very rich but we also need to spend in the right areas.

Dented, then what is ROmney hiding? Oh, and don't tell us what you told us on another thread that,"you suspect that it's just a lot of little stuff that all together looks bad and requires hours of explanation".

That's BS. Romney would take the heat and risk looking shady and like he is hiding something if it were that simple.

It will be about taxes,I agree with you. However, Mitt could have ended that conversation weeks/months ago but he plays by different rules.

I think Obama and the Democrats need to show the American people the difference. If they can communicate what Romney/Ryan want to do vs. what he plans on doing I think the American people will side with Obama.

"Now if Romney has to step down before November, due to tax-evasion charges"

What evidence is there of tax evasion? Romney probably gets audited every year (most millionaires do). He probably has scores of professionals who do his taxes for him. You think the IRS needs some cryptic, moronic clue from an idiot like Harry Reid before they will act? If one i was not dotted or one t was not crossed the IRS would have been all over him.
If you want to see tax evaders why not look to the Obama administration and Democratic Pary and the PROVEN tax cheats associated with the President?

Let's rehash the list so far.

Bill Richardson, New Mexico Democratic Governor, nominated for Commerce Department Secretary. He withdrew after it emerged that he was the subject of a Grand Jury investigation for influence peddling, due to his awarding of a $1.5 million state contract to political contributors.

Tom Daschle, Former South Dakota Democratic Senator, nominated for Health and Human Services Secretary. He withdrew, admitting that he had failed to pay more than $100,000 in taxes on a car and driver provided by a friend and on consulting fees after he left the Senate.

Nancy Killefer, former Assistant Secretary for Management and Chief Financial Officer of the Treasury Department during the Clinton administration, nominated for Deputy Director at the Office of Management and Budget and Chief Performance Officer. Killefer withdrew because of a lien against her home for failure to pay unemployment tax for household help.

Hilda Solis, nominated for Labor Secretary, was confirmed even though her husband had liens against his business going back 16 years. He paid $6,400 owed a day before her confirmation hearing.

Timothy Geithner, nominated and confirmed for Treasury Secretary. Geithner failed to pay $34,000 in self-employment taxes while he worked at the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2004. Yet he was still confirmed because Democrats said his position was too important to be left unfilled any longer.

DO I even need to bring up former Democratic Presidential nominee John Kerry and his luxuryious yacht? Or how about Charlie Rangel?
But it is Romney who is the tax cheat?? Based on WHAT EVIDENCE?
"Guilty until proven innocent", huh?

Romney is running for the highest office in the country and refuses to release his tax records. Obama,Biden, and Ryan have done so. Why is Romney better than them? NOT ONE of Romney's blind supporters can answer that. Instead they throw out names of people NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT and TRY to take the focus off the FACT that Romney is hiding something. He is nervous and shady.I hope the Democrats and the media start hammering away.

Mitt Romney is hiding something and the American People have the right to know what it is. The people dismissing Romney's tax records were the ones SCREAMING for Obama to release his birth certificate(which he did)

Republican hypocrisy at it's finest.

So if you don't let me inspect your bedroom closet, can I then assume that you are hiding illegal drugs in there?
If you don't let me inspect your basement, and the areas under your floorboards, can I just assume that you have dead bodies buried there?
If you don't let me do a thorough technically advanced scan of your computer's hard drive, can I assume that you have kiddie-porn stored on there?
Until someone comes up with EVIDENCE that Romney has cheated on his taxes, then you've got nothing but snide, snarky comments.
So, come up with the evidence.
I'll wait.

1) I grow pot in my closet so I don't want you in there. Plus it's where I keep the kitty porn my dog likes to look at.

2) I bury my pets under the floorboards and to take them out would be disrespectful and if you saw that Stephen King movie you KNOW what I'm talking about.

3) As I said, I do have kitty porn but you can scan my hard drive if you want to. I hope you speak German and like some freaky nasty shlt.

You have to resort to these radical insane scenarios? Can anyone be this stupid? MIKEY, you have not answered my question because you have no answer. Ryan,Obama, and Biden have allowed you to inspect their computers and their closets. They've got nothing to hide. Assume the worst if you must but why has the Democratic Candidate and his VP and the Republican VP voluntarily handed over their tax returns and Mitt refuses. Mitt's own father even questioned those who refuse to hand them over as having something to hide. Other's in the Republican party have asked Mitt to turn them over. You ignore this fact. If this were Obama refusing to release his tax returns do not even pretend for a second you would not be outraged.I bet you were one of those Tea Baggers demanding to see his birth certificate. You are nothing more than a hypocrite and everyone here see's that.

So, why are you making up these insane scenarios? you come off as desperate as he is.I actually feel embarrassed for you. Your last post was a pathetic excuse for a man who is nothing more than corrupt coward who is terrified to release his tax returns. He knew years ago he was going to run for office. Why didn't he try and scrub them and hide them back then. The arrogance that he felt he would not have to be subject to the same rules as the other candidates speaks volumes.(and you bow to your aster defending him, even though your case is paper thin you stick with your lame story regardless)

You Romney supporters are spineless cowards. You excuse this guy who clearly does not have your best interest at heart. You stand for nothing.
