Bette to Mary in NOW, VOYAGER: Dora, I suspect you're a treasure.
Now, back to Roz!
Now, back to Roz!
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

I'm confused. BFB---maybe you know, since you brought her up on the "MGM gals" thread... but was Roz signed to MGM? She made most of her movies at Columbia or Warner Bros., plus a few classics at MGM.
She was kinda all over the map, but if I had to draw straws, I'd say she was mostly "at Columbia."
Was she ever signed to a studio contract, or did she just freelance? (She must have been under contract somewhere. I think James Stewart was the first "free agent" once his contract expired at MGM around 1940-ish). He never signed another one, and freelanced with every studio in town. That was fairly unheard of back then for a leading player.

Snooty Film Forum in NYC should do a tribute to her and have Joanna Barnes come to talk about her.

LOL
That has to be one of the funniest supporting roles ever put on film.
Perfect casting, perfect dialogue, perfect character.

Watching it last night, when Little Glory said, 'Showoff,' I thought I heard a bit of Little Edie in there.

Roz was straight. A Republican too, I believe.
I used to visit her grave when I was in L.A. She has a HUGH cross towering over her grave - quite a show.
As for her being signed to MGM. I'm not 100% sure,to be completely honest. 8 of her first 9 pictures were for MGM. And she made about 10 more with them after that.
My guess is that she signed up with MGM when arriving in Hollywood - I have to dig up the few bios I have of her to be sure- was loaned out a lot.. and at some point freelanced.
Here is my Personal Roz Russell Best list:
Best perforamnce:
Sylvia in The Women
Best Film:
His Girl Friday:
All around great Triumph:
Auntie Mame
Most underrated film:
Oh Dad, Poor Dad....
Guilty Pleasure:
The Velvet Touch - She hair's breath away from being a man in drag.. and her eyebrows do all the acting.

According to everything I've read, including this month's profile of her at TCM, Roz was originally signed by Universal. She "navigated" her way out of her contract (the story is rather amusing) so she could sign with MGM, which is exactly what she did.
Did you know that Cary Grant gave her eulogy? They were lifelong friends even though they never made another film after HIS GIRL FRIDAY.

It's just like William Haines and Joan Crawford!
She breaks my heart in PICNIC.

Cary Grant introduced her to her soon-to-be husband too.
Something that always impressed me was that you hardly ever hear anything negative about her.
I've meet people who knew her and they all say she was a gem of a human being. Tough and Smart when it came to business..but thats hardly deroagtory.

Cary was also their best man!
Roz was very generous about GYPSY, too. She said that Merman SHOULD have gotten the movie Rose and that the role belonged to her. Roz adds, however, that there was no way Jack Warner was going to let Merman do it because of his past, negative experience with her on CALL ME MADAM. So Roz decided not to pass up the opportunity.
I plan to watch it this weekend. I want to re-assess in the wake of LuPone's Rose.

MissP - obviously, there are a WIDE range of opinions on this, but I personally think her Rose is phenomenal. I believed.

DG, I used to love that film. It was the last movie my mother and I watched together in December 1995. (Roz was my mother's favorite actress.) After that, I couldn't watch it because it was just too painful.
But enough time has passed that I think I can watch it now and not cry all the way through! (We'll see about that!) And, really, after "Roz Night," I really want to see her in a musical. Honestly, AUNTIE MAME is just like a musical even though it has no score!
It's great that TCM has these "nights" because it makes you realize how much you love the truly great actors.
