I'm loving "My Sister Eileen" right now.
I didn't realize that Janet Blair (Eileen) died earlier this year.
She was so pretty, and very good in this movie. I just looked her up on IMDb.com. Fascinating stuff... She starred in the national tour of South Pacific as Nellie for over 1,200 performances over a 3-year period. Wow.
They're doing the "Conga" right now. So very "Wonderful Town!"
Roz is perfection!

And never won an Oscar.
If she had not insisted on lead billing, she could have won as Supporting Actress for "Picnic." But she/hubby [?] insisted on pushing for a Lead Actress nomination and it did not happen.

Posted: 8/20/07 at 11:04pmHere's my complaint with TCM's lineup: I'm recording My Sister Eileen and The Trouble With Angels, but not Auntie Mame because I have it on DVD. But now I've started watching Auntie Mame and I know I'll be up until it ends. I'll be bleary-eyed at work tomorrow.

I forced myself to go to bed just as the Upsons were arriving for the final party.
It's my favorite comedy of all time...and certainly in my top three films of all time. Good lord is everyone perfection in that film. But little Glory's ping pong speech? Pure heaven.
re: Roz Russell Night on TCM!#18
Posted: 8/21/07 at 10:18amI always wanted to tell little Glory where she could stick her Bunny.....

I watched all three. I hadn't seen The Trouble With Angels in like 30 years. I guess I was so afraid of nuns when I was a kid that I never realized how subtle a performance Roz gave. One look at the habit and I just freaked! But last night I realized how perfect she was...and not scary at all.

I had never seen this version of "My Sister Eileen" either. But I loved it.
Such a strange "course" for a property! It started out as a Broadway play in 1940 with Shirley Booth as Ruth. Then came the movie version from Columbia Pictures we saw last night with Roz Russell (Oscar-nominated as Best Actress) and Janet Blair in 1942. Then came the Broadway musical "Wonderful Town" with Roz (Tony-winner) and Edie Adams in 1953. Then came a different movie musical version from Columbia in 1955 called "My Sister Eileen" with Betty Garrett and Janet Leigh (which is great fun too). Then came a TV version of the stage musical "Wonderful Town!" with Roz and Jacquelyn McKeever (plus several others from the OBC).
God that's confusing. But this story had some life!

The nuns in my elementary school wore those exact habits, too!
It was funny seeing so many actresses as nuns who also played other nuns: Marge Redmond (Sister Liguori) in The Flying Nun; Mary Wickes (Sister Clarissa) in Sister Act; and Portia Nelson (Sister Elizabeth) in The Sound of Music. I bet Mary Wickes played a lot of nuns!
