Ruby Foo's In Times Square R.I.P.

Just spoke to a friend today who told us RF closed recently. No idea why but it did indeed close within past few weeks. This will be a large location to fill . We were in it twice with the last time being a few years ago. Oh well, another one bites the dust

There was a Ruby Foo's tourist trap in Times Square? I never knew.

I think the closing of the diner on 43rd and 11th is more tragic. It usually comes down to exorbitant rent increases. It is hard to make a profit in restaurants to begin with.

Ruby Foo's was hot for a minute when it first opened and Pan-Asian cuisine was all the rage. The quality steadily deteriorated over the years as it became more and more of a tourist trap. I'm sad to see many people put out of a job, but it's no great culinary loss.

Wait, that huge diner at 43/11 closed? That's a shame as I preferred it to some of the diners like Westway and Galaxy on 9th.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

Yes, the Market Diner is gone. Such a shame. There are fewer and fewer places to get a good meal at a reasonable price in the neighborhood.

The loss of Ruby Foo's is no big deal. The loss of the Market Diner is the loss of another piece of old inexpensive fun and funky New York.

I see that you were a big fan and this is a great loss to you so thanks for informing everyone. I wonder where else someone would be able to get Pan Asian food in the TSQ area.

A very big loss! Loved the $5 wine. A great place to go before and after the theater. Hard to find a good glass of red wine for only $5 in that area. You can find cheap wine but not good cheap wine. SNIFF! A nice environment with the high bar tables and the chairs had backs and were very comfy to sit in. I will miss that place. I also liked the sushi. Some of the dumplings were way too spicy.

Times Square needs a Friendly's. If not that, then one of the Big Boy restaurants (Elby's? Shoney's? Bob's? Abdow's?)

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I lived near-ish the Ruby Foo's on the Upper West Side for years, and like many found it overpriced, not nearly as popular with the locals as other establishments. But then, eating on the UWS, at least back in the day, was always a mysterious activity. Enjoy any restaurant, it's gone in six months. Lived there 24 years, saw so much come and go, I felt like Rod Taylor in "The Time Machine" watching the windows change.

The thought of Rod Taylor is making me really hungry.

I liked the Happy Hour and the pretty environment. All the great sushi places are closing. Sniff. I loved that place but only for Happy Hour. The regular menu was out of my price range. The servers were really fantastic and nice.

Sad. Having a small budget sucks!

Times Sq.'s rent must be insane. I don't think anyone can afford it unless it's a huge mogul type place. I'm surprised Bubba Gump's is still a thing. Wonder what will go in there? Trying to think of some chain restaurants.

But on a side note we're getting an Arby's at 40th and 8th!

Good news re Arbys

Anyone out there old enough to remember the House of Gristle a/k/a Tad's Steak ?

It will be interesting to see what goes into Ruby's . It might be broken up for a food court type of deal. Gump cannot last indefinitely . Ditto for Hard Rock.

I have champagne and caviar tastes and a Subway budget. LOL.

Are there reallly truly ANY market segments in which Arby's is good news?

Chick Fil A would be a good choice. they still have lines down the block at their location

It's possible not to have a caviar budget but good taste.

Don't both Gump's and Hard Rock do an amazing Tourist business? I can't stand either one, but they always seem packed.
