Russian gold medalists kiss on medal stand at world championships to protest anti-gay laws

Kseniya Ryzhova and Tatyana Firov won a world championship as a part of the 4x400m relay team at the IAAF track championships in Moscow. They edged out the American and British teams for the gold. While on the medal stand, they kissed to protest their own country's anti-gay propaganda laws.

This isn't the first protest of Russia's laws that penalize anyone for talking about homosexuality in front of children, but it's the most visible one done by Russian athletes. U.S. runner Nick Symmonds dedicated his silver medal in the 800m to his gay friends back home, and Swedish high jumper Emma Green Tregaro painted her nails in a rainbow in honor of LGBT pride.

i hope not either but I doubt they will. Russian and eastern European women kiss on the lips all the time. If you remember the Olympics last time there was a lot of that between teammates and even other teams. Yeas ago anna kournikova and martina hingis when they played doubles together kissed on the lips a lot. Ifiyou u watch women's tennis which is dominated by Russian womenas well as czechs, poles and serbs you have seen opponents kissi g before and after matches . Its quite common. I kiss my fellow eastern European gf as well. But my American gf are not comfortable with it.

Now two men I'm afraid won't be looked at the same way.

sue, they stated that they did it to protest the anti-gay laws in Russia.

Whether it's common or not is irrelevent, since the two people involved in the kiss stated the reason for doing it.

These upcoming Olympic games are going to be historical. I can feel it. Not for the reason most people would expect either.

I can see other athletes rallying around these ladies and others like them and supporting them with even more demonstrative unity.

Where did they state that it was done to protest the anti-gay laws in Russia ? I would love for it to be true because it would improve my opinion about Russian people. But unfortunately I think it was just a congratulatory kiss which is being misinterpreted in the West. As far as I know, no Russian athlete has spoken out against these laws. And that's the real shame.

Addy--I'm glad you gave these two women (and the others who are putting themselves on the line) their own thread. That other thread got clogged up by troll posts and was eventually locked.

I think these brave athletes--who are not by training creatures of politics--are teaching us so much about true courage, which is not acting without fear, but acting in the face of fear.
