No big surprises. Few snubs.

Posted: 12/17/09 at 10:27amFirst glaring omission: Jane Lynch for Glee. I know there are fewer noms for TV because SAG combines lead & supoprting, but there should have been room for her.
re: SAG Award Nominations Released#2
Posted: 12/17/09 at 11:20amBiggest omission, that I know happened because SAG combined leading and supporting in TV shows, but John Lithgow in Dexter.
re: SAG Award Nominations Released#3
Posted: 12/17/09 at 12:30pmI'm thrilled for Betty White.
re: SAG Award Nominations Released#4
Posted: 12/17/09 at 12:58pmAt least the Glee cast was nominated as an ensemble.

Few surprises:
-No Anna Paquin? Really? That's absurd. She's giving one of the strongest performances on TV right now.
-Matt Damon for INVICTUS, I don't think people expected him to land nods at the Globes and SAG Awards. Can't believe Alfred Molina didn't get nominated.
-No Abbie Cornish for BRIGHT STAR. I really thought she had a chance of getting in over Helen Mirren and it's the kind of performance I thought the SAG would like to nominate. Oh well.
-AN EDUCATION for Ensemble: Yay. I thought they had one of the strongest ensembles of any movie I saw this year.
-Diane Kruger for INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. Never thought they'd pick her over Julianne Moore. Now I'm curious to see her performance in the movie. Wonder if she can get the Oscar nomination.

SO happy to see Diane Kruger here. I really, really, really hope the Academy nominates her. That is a performance for the ages. I will never forget it.
I'm not surprised at all that Lynch and Lithgow were not nominated individually because they both are part of the Best Ensemble categories, particularly Lynch because she is so criminally underused on GLEE. After all, she gets less screentime than even Puck who, pretty and talented as he may be, is a supporting player. It would have been wonderful if Lynch and Lithgow were nominated individually, but I totally understand why they were not.
Also, I predict NINE will pick up Ensemble just because it is one of the most starry and hard-working casts in film this year, or any year. CHICAGO won this prize, and I bet NINE will too.
So happy to see love for TRUE BLOOD and DEXTER (my two favorite shows).
Oh and I predict a tie for Lange and Barrymore. Why the Emmys did not give it to both ladies I will never understand, superb as Lange was on her own.
Oh, and Larry might walk away with the prize for Best Actor/Comedy. He really has shown unbelievable growth as an actor this season. The GG CURB snub has me BAFFLED, I bet they submitted the last episode of the season which, while wonderful, was not as good as the first or the "Muffin Top" episode. Larry should get this for "The Black Swan" alone.
DEXTER undoubtedly has the Best Ensemble on TV and I expect it to pick up the prize, particularly since Lithgow was snubbed individually (though I understand why). He has won the SAG three or four times in the past and his work this season was the best of his career.

Very pleased for Sandra Bullock.
While I really don't see "The Blindside" as an awards type film - I enjoyed her performance in it - and am glad she is being recognized.

I'm surprised at the Marion Cotillard snub, since I've heard so many great things about her performance. I guess they tried to push her for lead and it backfired.
BTW: Go, Sandy! In yo' face, ray! :-P

Posted: 12/17/09 at 2:09pmI hope the Modern Family cast wins the comedy award, because it truly is an ensemble show.

Haha, touche, StageManager :-P She'll definitely be nominated for an Oscar, and perhaps even win. It's a very weak year for lead actresses.
I think if the Weinsteins had campaigned Cotillard for supporting, she'd have gotten in over Cruz. I wonder what will happen come Oscar time, I'd have loved for Cotillard to have gotten in for lead over Helen Mirren or Sandra Bullock.
I was also surprised that John Lithgow didn't get an individual nomination. It has to do with the fact they don't divide lead and supporting. If you notice, all of the TV performers nominated are the leads of their shows whereas in different years a few supporting roles have gotten in (the always brilliant Chandra Wilson even won one year). I really wish the SAGs changed this since I think they alienate a group of actors that don't stand a chance against leads. That's how some of the brilliant supporting performances on TV get left out at the SAGs: John Lithgow, Michael Emerson, Jane Krakowski, Elizabeth Perkins, Neil Patrick Harris, Tracy Morgan, Jennifer Carpenter, etc.

Posted: 12/17/09 at 5:13pmI don't think Sandy will win. My money's still on Meryl. They'll say she's long overdue, but unlike last year, which featured another overdue actress (Kate Winslet), this year Meryl doesn't have that kind of competition: Mirren just won over two years ago, Sidibe and Mulligan are newcomers, and Sandy's nomination will be her reward. I loved Meryl in JULIE & JULIA so I wouldn't mind her winning for that.

Posted: 12/17/09 at 5:21pmMeryl Streep's performance in JULIE & JULIA is probably one of my favorites from hers, definitely my favorite of her comedic performances. I'd love to see her win. Still, Sandra Bullock has been around for a while, but she's also younger and pretty like the Academy likes their lead actress choices, and she's a huge star in a huge movie in which she got great reviews. I can see her getting what I call the Reese Witherspoon/Halle Berry Oscar.
re: SAG Award Nominations Released#13
Posted: 12/17/09 at 5:35pmActually, I'd see it more as a Julia Roberts Oscar, when she won for ERIN BROCKOVICH. It was a hit movie and featured Roberts' best performance in years. Likewise, BLIND SIDE has become Bullock's biggest hit of her career and she's finally getting notices for her performance, not to mention that this year alone she's had two hit movies, the other being THE PROPOSAL, which is her second biggest hit. Thus, the Academy will want to honor her in some way, but, like I said, a nomination will be her reward, and it'll legitimize as a "serious" actress. But my money's still on Meryl!

Diane rocked the role for as the German starlet turned double-agent. I am happy for her but she is stealing Melanie Laurent's thunder. Inglorious Basterds should win best ensemble. Too many good performances in that movie. Nine will probably win but IG should be rewarded for truly giving a great international cast that introduced American audiences to these great group of actors.
Modern Family over The Big Bang Theory and Parks & Rec? I don't get that show and probably never will.
I am pleasantly surprised Stanley Tucci's role as the killer in The Lovely Bones may be the token award for a movie that has been the wrath of many prominent critics, especially considering that in a couple reviews there was hardly any shock value with him as a killer. I read the book so I assume the depths of his character's psychosis is done well in the film to give it more complexities than he is given credit for.
Surprised Brendan Gleeson and Janet McTeer were snubbed given that their turn as the Churchills got them nods in other awards.
I understand that Jane Lynch is not a lead but she completely deserves a nod over Christina and JLD (both of whom I love but not in those shows).

I was just wondering why John Lithgow got nominated for the ensemble for Dexter, but not the rest of the happy Mitchell family or the kidnapped kid who played Scott. I think any of them deserved a nomination over the nosy neighbor from next door who made a pass at Rita.

THRILLED for Waltz, Kruger, and the Basterds. The cast of that movie was really flawless. Same thing with Precious.
Can't wait to see Up in the Air.
