I found the inability of Cooper to site a single negative consequence to same-sex marriage quite amusing. He was only to say that the consequences were "unknowable"

I agree about people's hearts being moved. My otherwise conservative husband has totally changed his mind on marriage equality (I like to think I had something to do with it). I don't know what's going to happen today, but the fact that it's even being heard is a good step.

Here's Part One of Ari Ezra Waldman's always-intelligent analysis from Towleroad:

The remarkable thing about the human heart is that it can be moved.

Most beautiful sentence I've read today. Thank you, joey.

And it usually requires a cooler and a helicopter to do it.

Very much in agreement. I had to read it aloud to my wife.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

Little personal rant and I can't put it anywhere else:

I am sitting right now at my brother-in-law's home. We've been here over a week now. He had an aneurysm rupture early last Tuesday morning. We've been here caring for his children and shuttling family back and forth to the hospital. He woke on Wednesday, which was pretty miraculous, but the aneurysm grew beyond the stint that was placed in his brain. They had to keep him sedated yesterday until they decided what was best. He's now in a much more complicated surgery with a very high mortality rate. We're trying to stay positive, but it doesn't look good.

I have watched this week as his wife has tried to handle all of the things she normally does while adding on her husband's duties, too. With three boys, that's quite a lot. While they are in school, she's been making calls and trying to figure out all that he does day to day to keep the family running. They both work full time. My wife and her mother are sitting at the dining room table right now, teaching her how to pay the family bills online. This is usually something BIL handles.

I don't want to turn it around and make it all about me, but I can't help but imagine this scenario if it was my wife and I and we were in Tennessee, where my family is. A few short years ago, she might not have access to me in the hospital. If we didn't set things up in a very specific way, she might not have access to our accounts. If, God forbid, my family tried to step in and take our house, car, hell, even our dog, they might have grounds. If I did have money, she would face huge inheritance taxes, just to get the money that we probably built together. Now that we have a child, it's even more complicated.

How does protecting my family impact anyone else's family or belief structure? If I want to get married, no one else has to teach their child that this was what God wanted. I just do not understand the arguments. It's about protecting families. Watching a straight, protected couple go through this is hell. Why on earth would you deny anyone the protection and peace of mind?

"That is where the compelling argument is. We're Americans, we just want to be treated like everybody else. That's a compelling argument, and to deny that you've got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn't been able to do anything but thump the Bible."

So says Bill O'Reilly

"It does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are 20 gods or no god. It neither picks my pocket, nor breaks my leg." -- Thomas Jefferson

Whatever the outcome, the fact that this is happening at all is heartening. As someone who came out in 1970, I never dreamed then that we'd see this day. Stay optimistic everyone.

I think they should bring in Jamie McQuilty's 10 year old self. That would really sway the argument. Jamie 'n' Sean are just over half way to their marriage goal and there are still four whole days left to donate!

Good reminder, Wilmington. Whenever I get discouraged on this subject, I think back to what my 18-year-old self expected in 1972. (Answer: not much.) Instead, I have a husband of 36 years, two terrific children and three grandchildren.

We've come a long way, baby, which is not to say we've come far enough.
