Sam Champion was never in the closet. Much like Anderson Cooper, he just didn't offer up the information to the general public but it's been pretty common knowledge among the gay community here in NYC.

Interesting how today's GMA had lots of congratulations for Sam and it was obvious that Rubem was in the studio because there were live shots of him. Oddly enough, Rubrem wasn't invited to join everyone on the set. George S's wife has been on the set, so has Josh Elliot's daughter. Virtually all of Robin Roberts' family has been called out of the wings at various times. Lara Spencer's family would certainly be called to join the anchors on a happy occasion--but not Rubem. Was ABC scared that it might result in a same-sex kiss between the engaged couple?

It's nice that ABC is being so open about Sam's engagement. Still, they're scardy cats.

He WAS on camera--just not on the same set that Sam was. If he was camera shy it didn't show because he was waving like crazy.
