In her new book Sarah Palin is not very kind to the contestants on "American Idol:"
"Did you ever wonder where the producers of American Idol come up with the seemingly endless supply of people who can’t sing but are deluded enough to get in front of a national television audience and screech out a song anyway?”
No one they have encountered in their lives—from their parents to their teachers to their president—wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth.”
Simon, however, gets a pass: “Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards and something in us recognizes and responds to that,” she writes. “Unfortunately Cowell is almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.”
Without hard-truth tellers like him, she writes, “a growing chorus of voices is trying to convince our kids that hard work isn’t necessary anymore.”

This puts me in the very uncomfortable position of defending Sarah Palin, but on this very specific topic, well...I agree with her and don't see why this little excerpt is the hot news story of the day.
She's clearly talking about the awful contestants in the early rounds, not everyone who has ever appeared on the show. And while a lot of those are jokes who just want to get on TV, some of them truly are deluded people who think they sing wonderfully because no one has ever told them otherwise. (Though I'm not sure why the president should give a shit, as she indicates.)
Yeah kinda like those lousy people who think they can dance on another show...
Why is she kissing up to Simon Cowell? I get she wants to sound like your 'dontcha know average REAL American' and sound hip mentioning American Idol, but really?
I actually agree with her on this. She could have included her deluded daughter Bristol in there too though.
Well, yes, we all agree with her.
I just think it once again demonstrates her pathological lack of self-awareness. The only thing anyone in her family has demonstrated an aptitude for is breeding.
I agree to an extent, but I have seen numerous deluded individuals who don't seem to have the resources available to adequately judge their vocals. I don't think it's the JOB of every parents and friend to give a professional assessment of the voice of a loved one. Now, there are outright idiots out there to be sure, but I'm not convinced that supportive friends and family who encourage someone to give their dream a shot is necessarily an endorsement of laziness or entitlement. As for bratty contestants who exclaim that the judges are wrong and don't know what they're talking about after embarrassing themselves with something amateurish or inappropriate, I think the actual cases of delusion are few and far between. They often know they aren't good enough and then throw a tantrum at the judges so they don't appear humiliated on camera. This sort of petulance has been around as long as the audition process has ever existed.
No one they have encountered in their lives—from their parents to their teachers to their president—wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth.”
President? How did she work George Bush into this? That's just plain weird.
Mister Matt - I think some of the tantrums are acts - just so that they can get on tv in the first place!
A Palin tweet today:
The publishing world is LEAKING out-of-context excerpts of my book w/out my permission? Isn't that illegal?
Uh, no, Sarah, actually, it isn't. Thanks for demonstrating, as always, your firm grasp the law.
(phew, I knew that agreeing with her crap couldn't last for long!)
I'm an aspiring writer. She and Lauren Conrad have already published two books each. There is hope for me.
Sarah Palin calling early AI contestants unprepared, untalented and entitled. Way to call the kettle black.
And big deal, she's dissing a tv show. The woman wants to be president. Who cares if she's right about it. So is anyone else with an opinion about sucky early round AI auditions. The show is built like that by the producers.
Please someone offer her an island off the coast of Siberia to take care of. She can be president of that, Russia will still be in her sights, and her constituents will be the local wildlife. Which she will try to kill from a helicopter. Makes as much sense as anything else.
