I was, after I graduated from the University of Georgia I worked on my teaching certificate at App State.

I find the intellectual and emotion resonance of the folk music movements, both the Appalachian and African that we have mentioned so far especially to be of particular interest and importance. The idea that we marginalize these groups for matters of our own self-interest and not any inate inability on their part is particularly evident when we think about these things.

As is the enourmous impact these forms have had on our popular music today. Which is important art, and I have always felt the derisive attitude many have had toward "popular forms" of music is related to the latent racist and classist supersturcture.

Obviously, I should never again be allowed to pick the topic for serious discussion.

I thought this topic was fascinating and am suprised there wasn't more input.

I was in meetings this afternoon--but where was everyone else?

The idea of telling stories through music is timeless. Odes, ballads, anthems.

Obviously, I should never again be allowed to pick the topic for serious discussion.

Maybe the implied scope of the topic was too vast?

Hey now, anyone could have narrowed it down, I was trying to throw out a whole bunch of ideas. I expected someone to narrow it down a bit.

oh no.

In that case the serious discussion should be the modern epidemic of psychological disorders, such as my extreme anxiety about such decisions, that I feel make people think badly about me. The fact that all of this makes me have a cold sweat, and the pure terror of rejection.

re: the serious discussion thread As cookie says below, in short, panic disorders.

I sense panic disorders as a topic for tomorrow? re: the serious discussion thread

Aw, who could ever think ill of smartpenguin? Not I.

I expected someone to narrow it down a bit, too. Perhaps everyone did. It's not the topic's fault. It's the board's fault. I'm willing to take full responsibility.

Me, too. Especially because I wasn't here all day.

I'm sorry I missed this topic.

Maybe SP will pick an aspect of it that we can delve into tomorrow.

I was just freaking out due to my topic's abject failure. See "panic attacks" above. re: the serious discussion thread
I did hope you did not think too ill of me.
We all failed in making the topic brim with life, and ring with harmony. re: the serious discussion thread

Addy, I can't go near it again. The fear is too great.

It still feels like my attempt here was so disasterous that iflit started the new thread to distance herself from this.
It does not have the same resonance to me if the "Serious Discussion" is not an official part of the thread.

I was in, today is a busy crazy day for me. (Which has been a big problem with the serious discussion all along, it is hard to do while working or on the run.)

Also I contributed as much I could to the thread already, I can't keep up enough to clarify and it has been a bad day for me being misinterpreted.

Sp78: Discussion Killer. That's two threads in one day my friend. re: the serious discussion thread

I'll try...

I tend to think of historical events with a soundtrack.

Civil Rights Movement - I immediately think of "Free At Last" as an old spiritual.

Due to the media and sitcoms I think the Battle Hymn of the Republic has been burned into my brain as the logical song of choice during any type of American History.

And then I realized I bumped the wrong thread.
*grumble*

Reposting here...

Soooo.
Since my little brief foray away from BWW didn't last so long, I wanted to find a "home" on the off-topic board again.
And god if I didn't love these serious discussions. So, since I've figured out how to juggle my workload with a few threads over the course of the day, back a-comes the serious discussion thread.
I hope some of you who participated before will continue to join in and, also, I hope that some of you who might read but not participate will begin!
So, with that said...topics? Thoughts? Ideas? Nothing is out of bounds as long as it can be a serious and respectful discussion. Updated On: 2/28/06 at 10:28 AM

As you can tell, my attempts at topics failed miserably. Oy
I am, however, very willing to jump right back into whatever serious discussion someone else chooses. Oy

Well, here's hoping. I'm a bit clueless as to a topic for today so I'm hoping some genius will chime in at any minute.

In the attempt to seem useful I will throw out two possibilities. Neither of which need to be used, just something to help stir the creative juices.

One: Dialogue between religions: How can we do it? What are the challenges? etc.

Two: The one I mentioned earlier in this thread. (that seems relevant to both of us at least.) Why are so many people so stressed today? Why has there been such a spike in pychological disorders? and How can we effectively treat those issues?

Again not "topics" persay, but maybe somewhere to start, or they could just remind someone else of a totally unrelated topic they want to discuss. Oy

I think both are good topics. If I had to pick one to go be first, I'd go with stress and psych disorders.
