has anyone EVER in any movie or live theater production lost it better than Shelly does in The Shining...It's on now in So Cal....and God I love her!
I need to see that.
I adore her in Altman's THREE WOMEN.

I loved her as Sueleen Gay in Nashville. Also - the epitome of Olive Oyl.
what was interesting is at the same time The Shining was on, so was Mommie Dearest and Sybil, so for a bit I was flipping between those
She was an amazing Olive Oyl
We were watching this too! The bf wasn't impressed with Shelley, but I love her! I wonder why she doesn't work anymore...
cheez...Shelley didn't play Sueleen...
Shelley Duvall is flawless in “The Shining.” I think she actually gives a better performance than Jack Nicholson (Shelley builds up to that hysteria so well…Jack just seems crazy from the get-go).
***
Shelley plays L.A. Joan in "Nashville" (Gwen Welles is Suleen Gay); she doesn't have a whole lot to do in the movie, but what she does do is hysterical.
I keep waiting for Shelley's big comeback in some great indy where she just blows everyone away.
she's memorable in everything she does. i loved her bit in ANNIE HALL:
Shelley: Sex with you is really a Kafka-esque experience.
Alvy Singer: Oh. Thank you.
Shelley: I mean that as a compliment.
remember her fairy tale theater series?! loved them.
a unique actress whose skills were put to good use by directors who appreciated her. doesn't seem to work much anymore. she is a really close friend of paul simon and the last time i saw her was with him. i wonder what she's up to these days.
remember her fairy tale theater series?!
You just HAD to bring that up, huh?
so sueleen, what's wrong with the fairy tale theater?
Anyone here care to fill our ex-CoD in on the drama concerning Faerie Tale Theatre?
Oh do tell about this Drama in Fairie Tale Theatre!
I have the ENTIRE COLLECTION!!!!!!
I LOVE Shelley in "The Shining"
and I agree, she was PERFECT for Olive Oyl!
Remember that song, "He needs me, He needs me, He needs me, He needs meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
I love her. She was so underrated in The Shining. And her performance in 3 Women is one of the greatest I've ever seen.
She's extraordinary in THREE WOMEN. The way she dons the hooded terrycloth robe to head to the apt pool remains my favorite detail.
But I think she'd be *equally* extraordinary in either the film of WICKED or the sequel to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (just so some posters don't feel left out.) A toothy, twangy Morrible or Ennis's younger daughter in 1990, coming out, finally, as a Wyoming lesbian d'un age certain.

I love Shelly Duval, but, as a huge fan of the novel, I thought she was a terrible choice for The Shining. The character of Wendy is supposed to be strong and (sorry, Shelly) beautiful, but I thought Shelly played it waaaaay too whiny. Hell, by the end, I want her and the kid to die because they were both annoying. I thought Rebecca DeMornay was much better in the role in the miniseries.
SorryGrateful, it's hard for me to even think of Kubrick's movie as an adaptation of the book. Pretty much every choice that Kubrick made was in direct conflict with the novel. Shelley fits in perfectly in this movie, but you're right, she doesn't match the book's Wendy at all (which I don't think is a bad thing...Rebecca DeMornay bored the crap out of me in the TV-movie).
I'm in total agreement with NC......the TV movie bored me.

I see your point, NCGuy. I know that Stephen King himself has sort of "disowned" the movie, since it was so different from his vision. I really do like the movie and I think it's wonderful. But even when I don't compare the movie to the book, I still think Jack was justified in trying to off Wendy. Spending all that time alone with that whiny voice and that stringy hair would have made me reach for the axe as well.
Yeah, I have not read the book to The Shining, but I do know that it is different from the 1980 film.
I have seen the 1997 mini-series and it BORED, although I was determined to finish it.
I enjoyed the miniseries, but that's probably because I'm such a huge fan of the book (and of Stephen King, in general).
The Kubrick film, however, works beautifully as a stand-alone piece. I also agree with NCGuy that Duvall fit in very well in the adaptation.
I love her in Faerie Tale Theatre!

Has anyone seen her in The 4th Floor? She plays the creepy Martha Stewart, but not the famous one. I like her a lot in that movie.
Few of Kubrick's films adhere to the source material, witness Lolita, 2001...although I think Clockwork is pretty faithful. Stan liked to use these novels for a jumping off point, rather than a true adaptation.
And it's Shelley Duvall, Elphie
corrected, lil dogs, you lil darlin
