Shia LaBeouf talks about rape while doing performance art piece

http://mic.com/articles/105320/shia-la-beouf-s-rape-claim-is-no-laughing-matter

As to the question why aren't people talking about this, that the article raises... I had never heard of it before--and I suspect that's true for others, so that's a big reason right there for lack of discussion.

I do think it should be be taken seriously. And yet, I hate to admit, but my gut reaction is that Shia has said so many weird things this past year (witness his talk show interview about the time he was arrested at intermission during Cabaret which he claims his behaviour was due to him thinking it was an actual cabaret and not a Broadway play,) and a lot of it does seem to be unquestionably just to stay in the media spotlight that my first reaction was he was just trying to keep media attention.

He allowed the crowd to say and do anything. Nothing was stopping him from stopping the woman if he felt she crossed the line. Nothing was stopping him from shutting down the event but he kept going. He could have talked to his girlfriend and he refused. It's like a guy at Folsom willingly putting himself on a sling, having sex then saying he was raped much later.

Wildcard--I agree with you. And yet, I know from experience sometimes when things like that start happening you do just freeze up. So... That said. Ugh, I shouldn't even make this statement, but I don't buy it. This is the same guy who apparently had no idea he was at a broadway play when he saw Cabaret but thought he was at an actual cabaret (I've been drunk and high off my ass before--I've never been that delusional.)

Eric, on Kimmel, he never said anything about having no idea it was a Broadway show... he just seemed to think if they break the fourth wall, that is was a two-way thing.

Sure, Wildcard, blame the victim from not stopping the assault, not the rapist... you should avoid the Bill Cosby thread. Shia LaBeouf talks about rape while doing performance art piece

I guess I watched the Kimmel interview with a different point of view. You are right, though, he did seem to think the audience was part of the act.

This was posted on my FB wall:

"I have no trouble believing he was raped. I don't think he should have had to take safety precautions. What I do have trouble buying is why a person who is not being physically overpowered (meaning held down, held at knife or gun point, or threatened with harm unless one complies) would allow the rape to happen in the name of their art. Rape by definition is being forced either through physical or emotional intimidation. I can understand being committed to one's performance art to this degree, but then is it rape? If part if the point of your art is to show what humans can/will do in these situations, than the physical or emotional abuse levied is part of that art.

Saying later that it is rape changes it from an organic product of that artistic piece to an outside act - and if that is how one views it, then the assault should not have been accepted. From his own account, it appears that Labouef sat passive as he was stripped and raped.

One cannot claim that the events that occur cannot be interfered with in the name of art, while at the same time saying that actions taken against him or her and not defended against (in other words accepted) were rape.

He was not incapacitated. Do artists not also have a responsibility to defend the integrity of their work? It's either part if the art or it's not, but by not defending himself and later calling it rape, he cheapens both his art and the true intimidation of rape."

I have a feeling that LaBeouf arranged it.

LaBeouf interrupted a work of art (Cabaret). He stages an "I'm Sorry" work of art that is also interrupted? He's trying to purge himself of the sin of interrupting art by having his art interrupted.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

He's a pathetic piece of SH*T.

For us to even discuss this as rape is an insult to every woman who has ever been raped.

How long until he stages his public suicide? Even that would be an insult to suicide victims.

I have a REALLY difficult time with this. WARNING: JUST TMF*CKiNgI coming, but I don't care: As a rape survivor, (survivor? maybe. Pissed off bitch who eventually wanted dicks on a spear is a better term, but whatever.) I usually defend the person making the claim. In my case, there was alcohol involved, I was underage, one of the "attackers" was my boyfriend and he gave permission to the other two involved. I felt like I didn't have the right to speak out. I drank. I snuck into the dorm. I was dating a guy who I knew could be arrested for statutory rape if we were caught. It was ALL my fault, or at least that is what I was told and believed. I never spoke up. There are a lot of situations where people are raped who feel like they are responsible because of the position they allowed themselves to be in. The guilt over that is horrible. The What ifs follow you day in/day out for the rest of your life.

Call in the PC police, but Shia LaBeouf is full of SH*T. He could have protested at any time. He could have stopped her. He could have called in whomever was nearby. He didn't do any of those things. To the best of our knowledge, he was sober. He is trying to get publicity. I honestly think the man needs major psychiatric care.
Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!
