Shut NYC Down

"Shut it Down!" attempts to disrupt the GOP convention by begging people to call in sick for work

Besides being a horrible, sophmoric idea, (akin to the "demonstration" where 50 people screamed in unison for 15 seconds) this is a ridiculous plot to damage the economy of NYC.

This group claims that the current administration has betrayed NYC, specifically. How does it propose to protest this? By cheating the people of NY out of millions of dollars in revenue, both directly and through sales taxes.

By writing letters to Broadway cast members, store workers, restaurants, and the like, this group is attempting to sabotage not just the convention, but the economy of Manhattan.

It is an incredibly futile charge. Quite simply, it will not work. Whomever is involved in this ridiculous protest is violating the rights of those who depend on income from tourism.

Nothing will come to a halt. Nothing will shut down by encouraging people to call in sick. If anything, the few who do follow this call to stupidity will miss out on their only chance to take something of real value to the conventioneers... their money.

One can only imagine that professionalism and a desire to take the high road will win out. If not, G'Head. Shoot yourselves in the foot.

I wish it had been a Republican who came up with this 'idea'.

Democrats should have more brains than this.

Sounds like valid protest to me. We need more direct action and participatory democracy.
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

re: Shut NYC Down

Most of this has been discussed on the thread on the main board. One point, however, nobody's rights are violated when they make a choice to call in sick. I respect you right to disagree with the concept, but on that point you're talkin' nonsense.

I'd rather talk nonsense on one point than nonsense on twenty....

Not really. If the actors call out sick, the performance is shut down, which means musicians, stagehands, box office, ushers, etc are all affected - and without that same choice.

While perhaps a noble idea, I don't see this every actually happening. Especially in light of the recent equity/producers battle.

Calling in sick isn't participatory enough. There are going to be organized protests during the convention, no? Go make a sign and join one of those.

We need to rename the political parties. Democrat and Republican are both boring names.

The Sharks and the Jets anyone?
