I'm just saying, and most capitalists would agree with me, that nobody has a "right" to make a profit. The "market" decides, and markets are moved by sources outside our control, like HUGE security measures that prevent traffic from getting to businesses where the "rights" of the people who work their to make money are all but eradicated.

It's not my argument, it's yours.

Seriously--I just think you owe it to everyone not to pass off other's info as your own. I know you want people to think you are that smart. It does color a fact when you tell us where it came from. And, darlin, I do not spend my time listening to pundits, and I never read blogs.

Oh, Namo, you're missing the foundation of their argument.

They absolutely believe in the "right" to make a profit. They just don't believe in the right for a woman to choose about her reproductive health, the right of all Americans to afforable health care, or the right for Americans to do whatever they want to do in the privacy of their bedrooms.
Stop worrying about what I'm doing -- focus instead on what you're eating.

you seem to think that i only respect people who agree with me. that's a poor assumption, but not an unexpected one. on this board, there are very few people who agree with my opinions or facts, however, plenty of them do respect them just as i respect theirs.

And, if you had held that argument in high school or college, you would have gotten an automatic F on any essay. You certainly demand proof of facts from the likes of Moore. So, I ask for you to offer proofs of fact. I do it, and I just ask the same of you. All it requires is a little cut and paste of the url. What REALLY bothers you about doing that?

It's ridiculous to judge the accomplishments of an Administration solely on line-items. Clearly, a budget is a reflection of priorities -- like when the Bush Administration flat funds the Ryan White program despite making the discussion of the fight against AIDS a centerpiece of the last State of the Union address along with landing a man on Mars and a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

But the appropriation only tells a small part of the story. As regards AIDS, for example, you cannot ignore this Administration's attempts to stifle the scientific community's research on men who have sex with men and other sexuality-based projects. So while the Bush Administration might pump money into fighting AIDS, it does more harm than good when directed only at abstinence-oriented or faith-based programs.

Same is true of the VA funding.

Well put Namo. Of course there is no "right" to make a profit. It is a very socialist/communist notion. Nor do you have the "right" to work in an unharried work environment (which was one of CK's earlier suggestions). In fact, unless you are a contracted employee, you have precious little rights. You do have the right to call in sick, in most cases multiple times a year. Now whether or not someone wants to exercise that right...

You are also right about the convention in general. It is going to cost the city far more than we will gain. Businesses are closing, the entire Chelsea/Garden/Times Sq district will be negatively affected by the street closures and general lockdown

Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I just typed "godhatesbodybuilders.com" into my browser.

You gave me a flashback to the day I went to see The Last Temptation of Christ at the theater. It was opening afternoon, and there were the obligatory fundamentalist protesters outside the theater. None of them had seen the movie, of course. Anyhoo, I'm standing in line and watching the protesters and the people arguing with them when a pedestrian and his approximately five year old son walked past. The kid, as are kids wont, was wearing a dinosaur t-shirt. The fundamentalist saw the t-shirt, and interrupted the argument he was having with a movie-goer to say in the direction of the guy and his kid, "Jesus hates dinosaurs, by the way."
