re: shut nyc down

Rath,

Anyone who saw the steamy porn with her and her husband...

I couldn't even finish that sentence.

It was the most uncomfortable, passionless thing I've ever experienced...besides sex with a chorus boy.

We call it progressive taxation, it's the basis of our current tax code. You can look elsewhere for discussion of the inequality of a flat tax.

re: shut nyc down

Papa,

I will say this. The only time I ever truly believe in outing is when a someone in government aligns themselves with a homophobic agenda. If Condi were a lesbian and were supporting the President's push for a ban on gay marriage, then I say all bets are off.

Robbie, have you seen the work that Mike Rogers (blogactive.blogspot.com) and John Aravosis (AmericaBlog.blogspot.com) are doing on that front? It shocks me that these people can look themselves in the mirror each morning.

re: shut nyc down

well, robbie, we'll have to agree to almost agree. i could see outing someone who was pushing an agenda that would benefit a group of which they were a member without disclosing that they were a member of the aforementioned group. but i don't know what good it does to point out, "you must really hate yourself a lot!" like it's gonna matter to the person. if they've achieved a high office while in the closet, it's gonna take a lot more than someone saying they're gay to make them admit it and face it.

plus, such a disclosure has the potential for backfiring. now i know i'm stretching, but someone with such self loathing, someone who is willing to push an agenda that minimizes their rights and limits their abilities to share their lives with another in an open and equal way with all the the attendant rights just because they happen to be of the same sex, what would stop such a person from going even farther if targetted by the community they deny? the poster girl for lesbians against gay marriage?

re: shut nyc down

Papa,

Have you read BLINDED BY THE RIGHT? I, for one, found it waaaay too whiny and self-serving. I mean...all those books are self serving...but, my God, Helen Keller could see it was self-serving and she's not only blind, but dead.

But I find it reprehensible that there is a certain level of acceptance if you play by their rules, which means backing their antigay agenda. We're not talking Log Cabin gays...who I actually admire for being out and trying to change from within...we're talking about people who have chosen to betray an essential part of themselves in order to cause damage to a minority to which they belong.

If Clinton's blowjob wasn't off-limits, then neither is this!

This thread has certainly evolved. From the initial intent to gay figure skaters, homemade porn, and outings.

re: shut nyc down

The efforts currently happening in D.C. are not really outing. These guys/gals are already "out" in that they have partners, go out to bars in D.C., some have even been featured in the gay press. Yet they work for people like Jim Inhofe and George Allen. Surreal.

We really are a melting pot.

I hate getting caught up in the fights about political ideology... There isn't a person on this board that I wouldn't have an excellent time with at a dinner party... yet we are miles apart on these types of topics. Hopefully in November, it will simmer down a little for a few years.

re: shut nyc down

no way, ck. you've got to brace yourself for the inevitable attempt at impeachment that will follow after this race continues to mirror '72 and hands gw a stunning victory. oh and if the gop does lose? you thought newt ran a bada** roughshod coupla years in the house? fuhgeddaboudit. the jonnies will still be facing a gop congress and one that's more than a little pretty pissed off. the anger, too, will not subside as it will be a convenient crutch to balm any failures of any following administration. but my money's on the impeachment push.

re: shut nyc down

Papa - if the Democrats gain the White House, I hope the Republican congress is mad as a wet hornet - and we end up with TOTAL gridlock. At this point, considering what has happened with one party in control of everything, I would love to see the inability to get anything done. Everyone go to your corners and take a breather - take a pill - take an enema - do whatever to get us out of this ridiculous situation we face here and abroad.

re: shut nyc down

My guess is we win the White House and the Senate and pick up a few House seats as well.

re: shut nyc down

I'm predicting that there will be a Kerry victory, by a slim margin... but the GOP will pick up more of a Congressional majority.

re: shut nyc down

Interesting, Ckeaton...but, in truth, I've always thought some of our best years happen when the President and Congress are at odds...nothing too extreme is done, compromises are reached, everyone (pretty much) goes home happy. With trigger-happy Bush and the lemmings who constitute the Republican party, we've had 4 years of following the village idiot blindly and I would take a blind howler monkey over Bush at this point.
#94

re: shut nyc down

lemmings who constitute the Republican party
Now, that's not fair. It's a sweeping generalization that includes a lot of good people.

I'm trying my hardest to stay away from those. You should too.

But, political parties and unions do lend themselves to that type of behavior that you mention, don't they?
Hamlet's father.
#95

re: shut nyc down

Yes they do indeed, CKeaton. As much as I'm thankful for Actor's Equity, they infuriate me sometimes (and my dad is often at odds with his union). i wasn't necessarily referring to Republicans in general (although so many of them will follow Bush blindly into a burning building when he clearly has no idea what to do there) but rather the ones in Congress who seem to agree that a Dubya dictate is a mandate from God.
#96

re: shut nyc down

bway, to quote dan ackroyd playing andrew card on snl, "the president is 50 feet tall and i've seen him personally walk through mountains!" obviously bush's wards are not mandate's from god, but more close to the words of god himself as passed through his vessel on this earth: dubya. alleluia, alleluia.

jrb, y'know, every post i make here is not aimed directly at you. in fact most of them are made with as much thought towards you as i normally give you during the day: very little. i'm glad that you back up every post you make attacking the bush administration with multiples independent sources (*cough*), and as soon as everyone who attacks the administration does the same, i'll think about worrying whether you believe me. in the meantime, you can check the omb reports, the congressional record, the daily briefings, roll call, stars and stripes and such just like me.

re: shut nyc down

"Whomever is involved in this ridiculous protest is violating the rights of those who depend on income from tourism."

Wow, I'm not just picking on you because of who you are, ckeaton. But really. Your analyses are never cogent and the above is a prime example. Believe me, Boston business lost money the whole time of the DNC. No business anywhere. The security meaures all but shut down the city for blocks. Not protests. The logistics of the convention. So in a way, if you're arguing about the "right" to make income from tourism, the real tramplers are those who held the conventions in the middle of cities.

I just love when reactionary people take on the lingo of their opponents that they generally mock. You know, like the "outraged" Republican mouthpieces who keep parroting back the line about the John Kerry "hate fest" that featured some outspoken performers?

I mean, isn't "hate speech" a terribly "p.c." thing to say coming from the very people who have done nothing but mock "p.c." from the first day they heard about the concept?

re: shut nyc down

God Damn It NAMO!
The post that started this thread is a perfectly valid point!
You add a layer to it that I have not to this point considered in relation to it... perhaps for a reason.

Conventions causing dead-lock isn't even in the same ballpark as 1000 actors and service industry pros calling in sick to protest the delegates being in town. The convention will not shut down Broadway shows, shops, or the majority of NYC restaurants...

So how does gridlock equate to protest, other than creating gridlock AS protest?

you're worried about intellectual property rights now? or are ya pissed off that you can't have the sources so you can try to discredit them? it's all there for you to find, pal. do the research instead of listening to the pundits and the blogs.
