Sin City

I caught the first screening in my for town this film, and it was...

Well, let me put it this way: In the past three months, only two movies seem destined to make my top 10 of the year (even though it is too early to tell). One is "The Upside of Anger", and the other is "Sin City". I have never read the comic books by Frank Miller, but watching "Sin City", it's as if drawings have come to life.

Instead of writing a review, I'll just give you a list of what to expect:

- Superbly-drawn, unmerciful characters
- Eye-popping visual effects, and colors that practically pop off the screen
- Gallons (no, make that pools) of multi-colored blood
- Skillful and sharp direction by Robert Roderiguez
- Juicy, provocative dialogue
- More T&A than you can shake a stick at
- A ensemble cast that will go down as one of the best in recent years
- Pure horror, from the most unexpected places (Nick Stahl, Elijah Wood, and Josh Hartnett)
- A thumping musical score

and finally...

- An unforgettable, award-worthy performance by Mickey Rourke.

WARNING: This movie is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart. If you fall under this category and you see this film, you'll probably want a long, hot shower after it's over.

re: Sin City

I heard that there is a lot of violence toward women in it - for that reason I may not be seeing this film.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" re: Sin City

How's Rosario Dawson? I've yet to see her in a movie, but this might be the one I choose.

There's a lot of violence towards everyone in this film, not just women.

Emcee-

Dawson has a crazy, meaty role in this movie.

re: Sin City

I probably won't see it then. As interesting as it looks, I just get very uncomfortable watching a lot of violence on screen.

re: Sin City

I can take violence to a certain extent, but in this movie it just seems pointless- like it's there purely for the pretty and for some kind of posed toughness.

It's telling that Quentin Tarantino directed a scene here- Kill Bill vol. 1 was that kind of movie, too. Not my cup of tea. But I will say the visuals look to be very, very nicely done.

re: Sin City

It looks really unique like Quentins movies. I wanna see it.

The trailers look great. I'll bite.

re: Sin City

I hate how so many graphic novels have men with guns and women as prostitutes or strippers.

However...

I'm a sucker for visually stunning films. And Elijah Wood (who I've been waiting for to get a role like this) and Clive "sex on legs" Owen are too much in one movie for me too pass up.

re: Sin City

I have to say - it's nice to see Clive Owen WITHOUT his accent - which drives me crazy. I just don't get Tarantino movies - they're SO violent...not my thing at all.

re: Sin City

In every Tarantino film, as well as in "Sin City", the violence is necessary and justified. Some good guys get hurt, yes, but the villains always get their comeuppance.

EDIT: For those who are concerned that all of the women are strippers and hookers, you should know that the men aren't doing so well, either. The men in this movie are: Lowlifes, freaks, pedophiles, dirty cops, etc.

How has JohnPopa not touched this thread yet?! I'm shocked! It's like SpiderDJ abstaining from a Catherine thread!

re: Sin City

I realize that everyone in Sin City is a lowlife. It still looks like an exaggerated version a male adolescent fantasy to me. As do most comics, sadly, but I guess they're playing to their audience.

re: Sin City

Of course, I am going to see this movie for my boyfriend, Clive Owen, but I can't believe you said it will prob. make your top 10 list...it got pretty terrible reviews and I have a bunch of friends that went last night and said it was absolutely awful. I'm still going, but I'm just surprised you liked it that much. Then again, didn't you really like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and think it deserved Academy Award Nominations?

re: Sin City

I thought that SIN CITY got mostly positive reviews. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars. Then again, I don't base whether I see stuff on reviews.

re: Sin City

in my newspaper, it says it got 3 and a half stars

re: Sin City

Sorry, I was donating several hundred dollars to the trust fund of my local car mechanic's children this morning.

Loved the flick, love the material it's based on. No, if you don't want to see violence there isn't much point in watching this movie.

Like Broadway86 said, there's violence against everyone, not just women. In fact they end up getting off pretty easy compared to their male counterparts. The women aren't damsels in distress or vanilla maternity images either. Last I checked, Clive Owen might be getting noticed for his looks, too. :)

Actually it's at 77% positive reviews based on rottentomatoes accumulation of the reviews so it's not like the movies been critically panned as a rule although some critics haven't liked it.

re: Sin City

Maybe I was mistaken about the reviews. I read a bunch online, and they were all fairly negative. But if it's getting good reviews, that's amazing - I really want this movie to be good for my Clive...!

re: Sin City

The movie has a Metascore of 75, so I'd say the reviews have been pretty good.

"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

re: Sin City

"it got pretty terrible reviews"

The movie got a numbber of out and out rave reviews. I look at RottenTomatoes and I see several of '4/4's and '10/10's.

"Then again, didn't you really like SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW and think it deserved Academy Award Nominations?"

I respect your thoughts, but I don't see what that has to do with anything. Besides, that movie got good reviews as well.
