My wife is both, but she wanted to lose a few pounds. She is in excellent shape and has not needed a "diet" since the birth of our 10 year old son.

She is reading Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin and she has announced that for now she is not eating meat or fish! She rarely eats red meat, but no fish?

Has anyone read this book?

no meat?

Well, that's been me as of lately... sort of. I've been eating a TON of hummus. An unhealthy amount... :-/

Never heard of the book though.

They tell you to go vegan. Lots of scary info about meat, fish, dairy products, and to go totally organic on fruits and veggies. Some valid arguments, I don't eat much (if any) red meat anymore and never liked fish, I still eat chicken. And still ok with dairy- tried soymilk for a week and then went back to normal.

Reading it now. The book preaches a strictly vegan lifestyle and the arguments make a lot of sense. They are very much conspiracy theorists, though. I chose to give up all meat except seafood and I still do eggs and some dairy. Still every time I have a dairy product, I think, "Cow's milk, by design, grows a 90 pound calf into a 2000 pound cow over the course of two years." I want the weight loss, but it's more about health and feeling better. With all the great meat alternatives, I don't miss it at all.

And Chapter 6 is the kicker. Let me know how you feel about meat after reading it.

It's a really fun book that encourages veganism by insulting the reader for being overweight and furthermore a horrible person for touching animal products. Because everyone knows that a little self-loathing goes a long way to motivating a healthy diet!

I'd rather eat a vegan than be one.

A girl I work with was reading this book and telling me how after work she was going to go food shopping for all vegan stuff and immediately become vegan. Well, she did... and the next week when I worked with her she was eating a ham and cheese sandwich. I guess the book didn't convince her that much!

My sister read it, and she already is a vegetarian. She tried convincing me to read it, telling me it was a joke and funny, but I don't think I want to now. But, I already don't like seafood at all, and I don't drink milk either. I actually haven't done that since I was about 4 or 5. Even I started turning up my nose at chocolate milk a few years ago. I guess it's just the fact that I know it is milk.

The hilarious writer/performer Julie Klausner writes about this book on her blog:

The name of this book offends me.

Well, I wasn't aware of the twist that was coming at the end, so I am not really happy about that. I don't think you should have to mask what a book is really about. I assumed it was as it said, a book about getting healthier and weight loss, with a vegan lifestyle being their way. Truth is, it's just a book telling you that you are a fat slob who hates animals for not being a vegan. It's just a book promoting veganism. Nothing more. Oh well. I am still digging the vegetarian thing.

Awww, that would be a great hug.

Actually, knowing that it's just masked makes me feel better about not following what they say. I like my shellfish and dairy products.

I haven't eaten meat since 1996. In fact, I've been avoiding cheeseburgers for the last couple of weeks.

Three little maids from school are we
Pert as a school-girl well can be
Filled to the brim with girlish glee
Three little maids from school

Everything is a source of fun
Nobody's safe, for we care for none
Life is a joke that's just begun
Three little maids from school

Three little maids who, all unwary
Come from a ladies' seminary
Freed from its genius tutelary
Three little maids from school
Three little maids from school

I worked with a woman who was a vegan. I saw what she was limited to eating, and knew that I could never go that route.

Veganism aside, these two "authors" seem like aholes.
