the tv said it's a small fixed-wing airplain.
i'm not sure what that means though.

A fixed-wing aircraft (commonly called airplane in North America and aeroplane in Commonwealth countries and Ireland, from Greek: aéros- "air" and -planos "wandering" — often shortened to just plane in both cases) is a heavier-than-air craft where movement of the wings in relation to the aircraft is not used to generate lift. A small aircraft has crashed into a high-rise residential building at 72nd Street and York in Manhattan, police said. Police are en route to the site, said to be at 525 E. 72nd Street. Flames and smoke could be seen pouring from the high rise apartment as fire engines raced to the scene

From the director of security in my office building:

A small fixed-wing aircraft has crashed into the 20th floor of a 50-story residential building on York Ave and 73rd St. Firefighters are battling a 3 alarm fire on three floors of the building. There is also a fire on the ground resulting from debris and a heavy fuel spill. Injuries are unknown at this time. 524 East 72nd St has been evacuated. LaGuardia International Airport is closed at this time.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management has confirmed this incident.

I feel so sick about this. I'm on the way to the city in exactly 1 hour for Barbras concert & now I'm really scared to go. IF it was a terrorist attack, she seems like an easy target, with all the people in MSG.

However, I'm feeling alittle assured it was just an accident because if it was on purpose, why hit an apartment building? Why wouldn't they go for something big?

I doubt it is a terrorist attack. I mean, it is a tragedy, but probably NO WHERE near the tragedy it would have been it if was a terrorist attack. They aim for big numbers.

I wonder how many more accidents before flights are banned over the city. La Guardia has a flight pattern over Manhattan and it always scares me when I see passenger planes. I know planes can crash anywhere, but over the city, it will just cause more casualties.

I think I heard Shepherd Smith or Bill Hemmer say that they are treating this as a terror incident, until they rule it out. Although, they are saying that there is no reason to believe it is something other than an accident; but until they prove it is not a terror attack, I would assume airports are closed. NORAD has dispatched fighter jets to various cities in the U.S.

National Security has been quoted as saying it's an accident, according to ch. 7.

Marvel Scott, their sports reporter, lived in the building across the street. The plane was going nuts, coming right for his (and his neighbor's) apartment. It went over that building and then nosedove into the Bel Air building.

Last time a plane crashed into a building in New York (not counting the deliberate crashes of 9/11), was in 1945, when a plane crashed into The Empire State Building. So, not a bad track record for planes and accidents in NY.

I work directly behind the building that was hit on 74th. We heard a big noise and moments later were told to clear the building. Out on the street, there was a clear view of huge flames shooting out of the building. Seeing a video shot from right outside my building has such a different impact than seeing it live. It's very disturbing.

Scary stuff.
