Mayor Bloomberg just said 2 people on the plane, a flight instructor and a student pilot with 75 hours experience.
(the city obviously can't release names yet)

Just heard confirmation that Lidle was indeed killed on the plane. I'm so sad. I loved him when he was on the Phillies. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the families of all the other victims...
EDIT: Got the confirmation from ABCnews.com.

I go to school a few blocks away and we got let out just as it happened and so a bunch of people from my school saw it happen which was scary, but we were far enough away that there wasn't smoke where we were or anything. There were crowds all along the street though trying to figure out what had happened...just really sad. We didn't know how big of a deal it was at the time, but I just got home and seeing it all over the news is weird.
ETA: Just realized that my friend's dad (a friend who goes to my school) is doing the 6 o clock news. That's weird because all the parents at my school were so worried.

His wife traveled today by commercial jet
All the money in the world could not get me into one of those small private planes
He was on top of the world a month ago - being traded to a contender
Kind of puts all the Torre nonsense into perspective

It will be interesting to find out what the final cause of the accident it.
Didn't they eventually decide JFK Jr crashed because he thought the laws of physics didn't apply to him?

My office is across the street from Cornell at 71st and York. 71st St is always pretty loud outside our window with traffic and trash trucks picking up from our building, but all of a sudden a co-worker and I realize at the same time that it was getting louder with lots of sirens. Someone else mentioned they thought they smelled smoke, which none of the others did oddly. All of a sudden another co-worker bursts in the door and yells, "Did you see what's going on?!" She tells us about the fire and the plane (which we don't believe at first) and we run outside on a rooftop playground at the end of the hall and see a couple of helicopters circling the area and smoke from that building. We could only see the top 20 floors or so.
When I left, York Ave for as far as I could see north and at least to 66th or so was shut down and looked like a parking lot for NYPD/FDNY. It was like a mini 9/11. I never once thought it was terrorism. Unlikely they'd go for an apt building on the UES. They had 1st Ave closed down at least from about 60th north to I don't know where. It was too far for me to tell. I take the 66 crosstown bus to Lincoln Center for the subway (and tonight for the NYFF), but it didn't seem to be running in my direction so I walked to the subway at Lex. Oddly it seemed to be going the other direction from at least the Lincoln Ctr area, but don't know to where. Traffic was a zoo on the east side.

Posted: 10/11/06 at 11:42pmI never thought terrorism, either. But when I was standing in the street watching the flames shoot out of the building, and listening to the choppers overhead and all of the sirens, it was impossible not to remember 9/11. And it occurred to me how on that morning when I first saw the news and only one tower had been hit, I also thought, "wow...some dufus hit a building". Still, although this afternoon was upsetting, I never felt threatened.

PalJoey... what the hell are you ranting about? Why don't you go find some liberal ranting to copy paste into to long-ass post that nobody really gives a damn about? That does seem to be the only thing you have to do with your life. :)
Iflit... did you actually think the word, dufus? :)
