With the number of kids being remembered for murdering their schoolmates and beating and torturing each other on YouTube, people need to know that there are teens out there willing to do something positive for a change. Who the hell said that a two boys becoming Prom Queen is going to change the world and allow gays to marry?

The idea is that if we passively allow prejudice and discrimination at the most local and direct levels (schools) how can we take on the bigger guys? Sometimes it really IS about the small battles, because they speak volumes.

Ohmigod, you guys!

So today at lunch, myself and a few of my better-spoken friends went into the principal's office during lunch and just laid out the facts: This rule is a violation of basic rights, it's ridiculous, and it needs to be abolished. I had some printouts from the ACLU; the argument was pretty convincing. The principal and dean said that they'd "take it under consideration." I figured we were screwed and was planning on calling the ACLU tonight.

During 6th period I was called into the dean's office. A couple faculty members (not the principal, but the VP and the dean) were there. I expected that they were just going to chew me out, but instead, they said that they had "reconsidered and would lift the ban for this year." I thanked them profusely, and when I was heading back to class an announcement was made on the PA system.

I'm still flying high about this, and shocked that it was so EASY - I was expecting the worst. Thank you all so much for urging me to do the right thing. It's really one of the best feelings ever. (Only downside to this whole thing is that I'm still a sophomore; I won't actually get to go to this prom, nor next year's since I'm graduating this year!) But whatever. It's still fantastic. =)

Now back to typing my paper on dissociative identity disorder I go...

And I still believe that this is just Prom. Nothing will be different the next day. In fact, it might be worse. Did y'all ever think of that? That the gay kids who might be outing themselves by going to prom together might just not like the attention? The gawking? The name calling? There's no point in making high school worse than what it already is.

Yeah, I wanted to take my boyfriend to prom, but we both agreed it'd be a horrible idea. As I was graduating, he was just a junior and we didn't want his senior year to be worse than what it was already going to be. Also, he wasn't out at home and we didn't want to mess with our family. Mine wouldn't have even let me go if I went with James.

Funny thing is, he moved over the summer, so it's all moot.

I can not express how much respect you have earned in my eyes.
Regardless of the fact that it was a fight against homophobia (although, to be sure that makes it more resonant to me personallY), the point is you stood up for what you believed in.
You should be very proud and I hope you share this story with everyone you know.


Also - I realize that we have all been painting the school as an enemy here, but the fact is a lot of schools would have still said no, bowing to parental backlash. The fact that they captitulated needs to be recognized as well, IMO.

I went to a private Christian high school, so we of course didn't have option to bring same sex dates to banquet (not prom, we weren't allowed to dance), but...I did manage to bring my boyfriend (at the time) to my 10 year reunion.

What you've done, VonTussle, is allow for a little bit of change -- which will save people years of grief and counseling. It is huge, and you should be very proud indeed.
