I have a question for the person who wrote that the school wouldn't allow boys to go together, but would allow girls: is this specifically about going together as a DATE, or as groups of friends attending prom together without a date?
I can't for the life of me understand why a school would allow two girls to go as dates, but not to allow two boys.

Our lives were hell in high school, and going to prom together would've made it worse. I didn't want that for him, not when he had another year at that school.
Don't you see that what VonTussle wanted to do would, at least in that one way, make things easier for gay teenagers? Your experiences might've left you jaded, but if you look at the big picture, anything that we can do to underscore the fact that there's nothing wrong with being gay can eventually change attitudes and give other people the courage to speak up. What you've been saying about this topic is like saying that Rosa Parks should have given up her seat and moved to the back of the bus, or that the sit-ins and boycotts of the Civil Rights movement were pointless. Sure, there are tons of other schools where same-sex couples will still be banned from prom, but why shouldn't we encourage and applaud students who are willing to stand up to those discriminatory policies? It's not not worth doing something because that one act won't singlehandedly change the world -- and eventually the small battles will make a huge difference.

Always, fight for what you believe, but....always choose your battles wisely.
I should probably clarify that - the racism thing started with a letter to the newspaper and ended up with me getting attacked during gym class and receiving honest-to-god death threats. I'm a fighter and not one to sit by while bigotry is reinforced by the school system, but there is always a point where you just need to pull out; when it gets to a point where I'm being physically harmed by my peers for peacefully expressing my beliefs, I draw the line.
To the rest of you - thank you so much for all your support during this whole ordeal. I've tried to keep the fact that I was basically responsible for the policy change pretty quiet. Not necessarily because I'm afraid of backlash this time, but just because I don't think it's something that people should really go out of their ways to congratulate me for. I don't consider something like this heroic. It's just me trying to be a decent human being.
Something interesting I noticed in a "Parents/Guardians Rights and Responsibilities" packet that was curiously handed out during history today - our school district states that "It is unlawful to discriminate on the basis of ethnic group identification, religion, age, sex, color, or physical or mental disability," but sexual orientation is missing from that list. I'm not sure if this can be construed to mean that by all means, it's golly well fine to discriminate based on sexual orientation, or if it's just an oversight on part of the district, but it jumped out at me. I'd personally like to look into that.

Maybe this story doesn't go perfectly with the topic but I think it's important to show the "POWER OF ONE."
One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

i think it's important for people to do exactly what vtg did. people will continue to discriminate and engage in bigotry as long as it doesn't touch their lives. granted some will continue to do so even if it does but the only way to truly equal footing for the glbt community in society is through understanding, not top-down imposed solutions that merely inspire reactionary over the top responses.
people can hate the amorphous idea of the glbt community much more easily than they can hate friends and neighbors and siblings and parents and relatives and co-workers. people fear what they don't understand and what they think is something that only affects other people. the more people see the diversity of the glbt community and that it dos touch their lives directly, the less easily they will dismiss and hate.
so little steps like this, while it might not be granting marriage rights, are the way to expose communities to the reality of america. good show, vtg.

In Ireland we call the Prom the 'Debs Ball'. And I've already accepted that I will not be allowed to bring someone of the same gender and I'm not even going to try fight it. Some battles are just not winnable.
I have a lesbian friend, though, and if she has a date by September, when ours is, we reckon I should bring hers, and she can bring mine. The school will never know.
