re: So Today I Found Out That Same-Sex Prom Dates...

Don't we already control NY or CA?

I'd like our people to control a place in middle America so we have a get-a-way place when the perils of home are too much.

I wouldn't mind a state in the Bible Belt. At least for a time-share. That's where we can go for Spring Break to raise hell and tear the place up.

Here's an article about Racially segregated proms in the South.....in 2003:

http://www.cnn.com/2003/EDUCATION/05/02/separate.proms.ap/

One of my jobs as senior moderator is running the senior prom each year. I usually have one or two gay seniors. This is the 5th prom I put together, and so far, I haven't had a gay senior ask to bring a same sex date. (What I do get all the time is boys asking to bring 3 or 4 girls as dates)

According to Sally Kern, we've taken over Eureka Springs.

Well, somebody had to. Have you seen their window treatments?

Okay, update -

I conferred with my counselor today, and she said I should talk to the administration about it. I put in a request slip to see the principal, but prom is in three days and the last time I had to go through the whole process of sending in a request form, I didn't actually get called in until a week later.

On the bright side, pretty much everyone I've talked to thinks this rule is ridiculous, so if I don't get seen by the principal by the time Friday rolls around, we may protest - with "Fight for your right to party" as our theme. (Thanks tazber!) I know a few people at the newspaper and one of our news stations, so if it comes down to it, we will involve the media.

Dang, this feels good.

Contact the ACLU by phone tomorrow morning.

Your school, administration, and local media is not going to make this their priority in two days, if ever.

The ACLU will get on it right away.

Agreed.

I really applaud your conviction and compassion, and if you'd like to REALLY do something about it sooner, you can make the calls NOW and come Prom day, it'll be different.

Go to this website:

http://www.aclufl.org/issues/issue_detail.cfm?iID=4

At the bottom, click where it says
"Download a wallet-size Know Your Rights card for students here!"

There are a list of rights, but for prom, it says, "Public schools cannot stop you from bringing a same sex date to prom. Federal Law protects this as freedom of expression, and you cannot be barred from prom because of your date's gender."

You go girl! That's awesome ... I too wish I'd had the cojones when I was in high school to stand up to the powers that be.

And re: It's not right, but it's the way it goes.
That just made me squirm. Should Rosa Parks have moved to the back of the bus where she was supposed to? Should the drag queens at Stonewall just taken it and not fought?

"I'm not sure I want to be remembered as the girl who fought racism in junior high and homophobia in high school"

For what it's worth, very few ever get remembered for anything at all. If you are indeed one of those who stands up for the rights of others, then you deserve to be remembered - by all of us.
