I imagine Christie will make his intentions clear sooner rather than later--although things could be hairy if he loses re-election next year. And if Booker decides to run, he could easily lose.

HRC vs Chris Christie. It will a lot of things, but it won't be boring.

Ryan will almost certainly run. But based on his really poor performance throughout campaign season (and especially if he loses his house seat), I don't expect him to get close to the nomination.

So who are the Republican and Democratic nominees in 2016?

I think Christie gets re-elected next year. Booker will run for Lautenberg's senate seat in 2014. I don't see Booker on the national ticket in 2016, but maybe in 2020. There are plenty pf strong Dems for the VP slot; Martin O'Malley and Brian Schweitzer are the first names that come to mind.

I don't think Booker will run in 2016, but I could easily imagine him on any potential Democratic candidate's VP shortlist. Martin O'Malley is a governor who really intrigues me; I would love to see him in a national election.

I think we are one cycle away from the splinter, Joey. I think the Tea Party will blame Romney's moderation and will push for a real right-winger in 2016. After they lose (again) they will leave the party and the Republicans will spin back toward the center.

I think a splintered race could throw the decision to the House, which might finally bring about the end of the electoral college.

I'm not sure of that at all Phyllis. But IF she wants it....

I used to think she didn't but Bill's relentless campaigning for Obama makes me think she might decide to give it "one and done"- pick a good VP and serve one term before handing it off to her running mate.

There have been rumors that the Clintons are already starting to prepare for a 2016 bid. Rumors, yes, but not unsurprising. She's the most powerful Democrat outside of Obama, has more experience than any candidate who would be running from any party, is popular and Bill's recent resurgence showed that the Clinton name is still pretty beloved. Also, the Democratic field is pretty slim right now. There isn't another Obama waiting in the wings.

Julian Castro or Cory Booker would be good bets for VP picks.


As for the right- Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Ryan. Santorum will return but won't clinch it. I bet Aaron Schock will be groomed to be a VP pick.

His obvious (and, unlike Paul Ryan, actual) hotness aside, he's apparently popular and is considering throwing his hat into the race for governor. He could be seen as the GOP's answer to the "we're a party of old, out-of-touch white men" problem.

Illinois' Governor's race is w-i-d-e open (much like Aaron Schock's legs I'm told). There is no obvious front-runner on either side.

I'd love to see Attorney General Amy Madigan run but she passed last time. A few months ago I actually heard Tea Partiers toss Joe Walsh's name around. His defeat tomorrow probably won't end that foolishness.

Yeah, I am beginning to think Booker will take Lautenberg's seat.

HRC is a possibility but factor in age, she'll be 70 in 2016 and there are questions if Obama gets a second term, how long she'll be in the cabinet position. It was sort of a surprise she lasted the whole term and people are still wondering if she will step down for a 'break' and be a professor in IR or even a university President at an Ivy. It would stink if it returned to a bunch of white guys running and I do want women running and perhaps be on the ticket. Gillibrand says she would not run in 2016 but she would definitely be a good VP pick.

Martin O'Malley has not really impressed me as an Obama surrogate. Half the time he seems to be bored that it is not him. Politically, I don't mind him, great if gay marriage is passed in Maryland but the only interesting thing for me about him is whether or not he really inspired the character of Tommy Carcetti on The Wire. He needs to really work on his charisma though. Schweitzer has that in spades, which is how he pulls off the bola tie.

I also wouldn't rule out Deval Patrick. Cuomo has also come up and then I wonder if people are ready for Sandra Lee as First Lady. Biden has not ruled out a run but age might. I personally am still surprised Biden carries the stigma of a joke and gaffe machine with the press with a one term over with.

I still don't think Chris Christie can win the party primary with the way the GOP structures it. I also don't think there are those in the party will prefer him over the more partisan, less-independent appealing candidates. And on a cynical note, I doubt he will start dropping the pounds to look more presidential.

On the GOP side. Paul Ryan is a possibility but I cannot say there is a good pathway for him to rise within Wisconsin politics (that hopefully elects Tammy Baldwin) given Johnson and Walker have the other seats of Governor and Senator. Given the state of the Republican house, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a civil war within the leadership like what happened in the 90s with guys like Cantor and Ryan taking out Boehner for their own ambitions. I am certain this will happen if the GOP loses the house now or within the next 2 years.

Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal are still big in the Republican party. I would also say Virginia Gov. McDonnell is another name to look out for.

I cannot believe Jeb Bush is still a name out there but whatever, for vanity's sake let's get the smarter but equally dangerous Bush son to bring the part into the 21st century!

I find it humorous that Schock is being groomed as a new conservative star, when his own career goes against so much of what they claim to value. He's a true career politician, elected to state representation at 23 and congress at 26, never held a job outside of politics. (Sound familiar, Rep. Ryan?)

Not that it's helpful to apply logic to anything republican.

Except by 2016, Hillary Clinton will have a jail record for her mishandling of Benghazi and the deaths that ensued.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
