re: So, What's Everyone Doing For Madonna's Birthday?

"Yes, Mister Matt, we all got you dislike Madonna. Now WHY are you once again raining on our parade in our thread? We don't give a crap what you think about her. And all you are doing is perpetuating her icon status BY talking about her--bad or not. You can argue until the cows come home, you will never deplete who and what that woman is."

The thread invited me to "reply to this message", so I did. I am not arguing Madonna's star status at all. I am more teasing than anything else. I just found comparing ANY pop star to a deity as being a bit over-the-top, so I responded. I'm just not exactly sure what all the fuss is about. She's a year older. That's nice. So what is everybody on this board going to do for my birthday?

But an awful lot of her fans refer to her as a deity. I get the feeling that Matt_G is doing it ironically (with perhaps a pinch of seriousness) but there are a vast amount of fans who will absolutely not call her anything else other than Our Lady.

She is the savior. She is our Lord.

Nuff said, bitches.

I LOVE that I got my new issue of ICON on her birthday!! It has great pictures from all of her concerts, but the pictures from Re-Invention literally brought a tear to my eye, recalling my first Madonna concert ever. I don't care if that sounds foolish!

She looks freaking gorgeous!!

I am def going to Cold Stone tonight!! :)

Can someone explain why Madonna is such a 'great talent'?

I'm not trying to be snide, but I am actually very curious.

Because since 1983, she has made some of the greatest songs, albums, videos, concerts, etc. in the history of pop music. Just listen to The Immaculate Collection for an example. Then, pop in GHV2. Then, Something to Remember. Any pop star would be ecstatic to have one YEAR of her career let alone 21.

And, if she was just great because of the marketing and the imaging, people wouldn't buy so many of her albums and singles. Lots of people have great image, but no talent to back it up and sustain a twentieth of Madonna's career.

What makes her music great besidess simply fantastic pop writing is that she uses humor and she provokes thought. The same is true for her concerts and videos. She is not flawless and fully admits it. But, she is the real deal. She has an energy that is electrifying. When she walks into a room--other celebrities stop and look. She is dynamite.

Her acting career is where the flaws abound, but she has done some good work on the stage and screen, and nobody can say she isn't fascinating, even at her worst.

re: So, What's Everyone Doing For Madonna's Birthday?

I usually DO celebrate Madonna's birthday (huge Madge fan that I am), but this year I was at a Sarah McLachlan concert instead. But right after the show (which was great, but doesn't hold a candle to Madonna), my friend and I had a passionate and extended conversation about how amazing and smart and wonderful the re-Invention Tour was! So I still had my August 16th Madonna Moment.
