People trying to find you can still search your name to find you. This isn't for that. This is for sharing a link to your facebook--especialy for people with common names. It's not complicated. Have you ever tried to link to your facebook page before? Before today it was a long, nonsensical web address.

That's great. Granted, one day you might want to email someone the link to make it easy to add you.

Other people do use their FB publicly or a public page...publicly and need this.

I did it... though I didn't particularly have any desire to do so. But my name is so common that by the time I logged on at 12:20 (randomly - I had totally forgotten about this) just my first and last name were already taken. Had to add the middle initial in there. If I had waited any longer it would have just been stupid.

I just miss the old Fbook. Y'know, the one without usernames, crazy layout changes and making your friends statuses readily available 24/7.

I signed up for my username pretty much immediately after seeing the little box advertising the process, not because I wanted one or understood why we needed them all of a sudden, but out of a crazy, irrational fear that my usual username would be taken and I'd never remember a new one.

I managed to get my real name so I am happy firstnamelastname (I share my last name with a famous political commentator - thus he must've gotten first dibs on it for his fan page).

Anyway, I am happy with just firstnamelastname as FB for me is strickly real-life people past and present only (and well enough hidden so anybody I don't want accessing it can't).

I don't have my last name on facebook at all but I do understand how handy the username can be.

Myspace has had this feature for quite some time now and I created one when I first signed up. I didn't think it would ever be useful but once it actually proved to be worthwhile. Once, in a hotel in California I could not log in to myspace. The wireless signal was screwy and every other page on the net could be accessed but I just could not sign in to myspace. But, because I had a user name I was able to type in my URL and see my page. I couldn't read or respond to messages but I could, at least, see if I had new comments. My friend, who did not have a user name did not have this option and went the whole stay without being able to even see her myspace.

I'm sure, as time goes by, facebook users will have similar experiences.

If someone I haven't seen decides to search me, they will do it the way they always have....just using my name. But if I run into someone, I can TELL them the direct way to find me.

I'm ASSUMING they will still need a friend request to see anything however.

All useful combinations of my name were gone. So was my normal online name (Fiyero) so I got facebook.com/f1y3r0
I wish I could have got my real name but ho-hum.

There was lots of confusion as I tried to get a username on Facebook. Almost every variation of my name had already been claimed. As a result, my username is now "Corine's Dana Cohen".

I don't like it.
