A shelter in Chicago for homeless women turned away a Lesbian...
Apparently the staff is totally comfortable with IV drug users and hookers but Lesbians make them uncomfortable.
No Lezzies PLEASE!
These things make me want to throw up.
Is that even legal? These people feel they are such wonderful humanitarians for working in shelters, yet they turn away those who are different. I'd fire their asses!

Why is the caseworker not talking?

This is the perfect illustration of another GW Bush policy failure: Religious groups cannot be counted on to deliver social services. The two most important sentences in that article:
"Rev. Bud Ogle, a Presbyterian pastor who co-founded the Christian ministry that runs the New Life shelter in the North Howard Street area...." and "The New Life shelter, which has 30 beds for women and children, receives $150,000 each year in funding from the city."
The Bush Administration will be remembered for its promotion of Faith-Based Bigotry.
I just LOVE these Christmas-only Christians!

Jesus would be ashamed of these so-called "Christians" who are really just bigots.
I am not surprised the case worker is not talking to the press. I am sure there are some confidentiality issues. The thing is there are always people out in front of this place smoking who knows what and drinking out of paper bags...but a LESBIAN would just wreak havoc!

'The study--issued in January by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the National Coalition for the Homeless--said one Michigan facility required that gay and lesbian youths wear orange jumpsuits to set them apart from others. Many lesbians and gays conceal their sexual orientation from homeless shelters to avoid "potential misunderstanding, abuse and rejection," the study said.'
This is ridiculous. Do I need to point out the parallels between this and something else people had to wear in the past to distinguish themselves from their betters?
Just a little bit of history repeating...
Where is the gay community in Chicago? Is there no GLBT Center? They usually have services for this type of situation.
wow thats really dumb and it just made me angry.
"Some of our staff are less comfortable with homosexual, gay and lesbian folks than others are."
That's the part that hangs this Reverend Intolerance. If he'd stuck to his clerical error on the bed counts, he might have gotten away with his organization's silent bigotry.
Too late. Now it's a whole different kind of clerical error.

She's suing.
Also, if Homeless and Gay/Lesbian/transgendered/Bi, call Howard Brown or Chicago house for referral to a friendly shelter.
Mind boggling.
We are here to help, but only those we approve of...

SorryGrateful, that's exactly what I thought. It's just as disturbing and unsettling as well.
And you know if a shelter said, "we except all people, except for blacks," it would be all over the news and there would be something done immediately. It's not fair that gays and lesbians get treated so differently than everyone else, and it seems like nothing is ever done to make it better. Ticks me off!
Come out of the closet folks--it's the only cure for ignorance. If this guy knew his son/cousin/nephew/neighbor was gay, he would almost certainly have a different perspective--unless his last name is Phelps, Schlafly or Cheney.

Jesus has been doing a facepalm for the past seven years
you know I expect this crap in the provinces, but in major cities, it amazes me this still happens.
I live in a city that is, at last count, at least 45% gay (I think that's the number given to me last night).
And we only have maybe 45,000 people here.
I just don't get it.

I would seriously call into question the scientific method that resulted in that particular statistic.
This is...ugh, no words.
Her suit will no doubt go nowhere fast because legally the shelter doesnt have to do anything, nor does it have to explain for its anti-gay policies because homosexuals arent a legally recognized minority in this great nation of freedom and life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
And if you were keeping up on your Bush this past week, you'd know he's threatened to veto legislation that would change that. God bless Amerika.
