It that so? How sad. I know its a tourist trap, but it was a great place to bring a large group for individual, inexpensive lunch and some (touristy) shopping. It worked for a high school group since it is self contained.
Anyone have any suggestion as to where else we could hit that would be similar? We are already going to Grand Central for lunch another day.
Yep. It's very sad. I used to live down there and it was one of my favorite places to go and hang out. The outside deck from the 3rd story, looking out onto the water was my favorite place in the entire city.
Um...I believe Pier 17 is still open. A lot of the stores in the cobblestoned area (J. Crew/Gap) were hit hard during Sandy. But Guess and Abercrombie and a few others are still open. There are some outdoor food vendors that are pretty yummy. There's an It's Sugar where you can buy enormous Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. That may be more of a con than a pro. And, as I said, the shops at Pier 17 are still open. At least they were about a week ago...unless something has happened very recently.
They've also put up an ice rink in the cobblestone section. Has something happened in the last week?
I've been there many times since September. I work near there and walk around on my lunch hours sometimes.
You're saying the mall is still open?
Sadness, and Bargains, as Mall at South Street Seaport Shuts Down
^That was the exact article I found which prompted this thread.
The southstreetseaport.com site is about the entire area, no mention of the mall itself.
Renovations to South Street Seaport include new mall
Thanks, Eris, for the 2nd article. Nice to know it's not gone forever!
I guess I haven't gone into Pier 17 since September...but the area before it still has a few stores, as well as the TKTS booth. And the temporary ice rink. It may not be worth coming down for that, but you could walk over and take in Trinity Church.

There were also some food trucks there. Could get some decent stuff when I went to the Four Winds Concert.
