Born and raised in NC. The fam was up to the city at least once a month for a Broadway show though. Mamma was in the business.
I've never had grits before. I don't even know what they are.
It's *kinda* like oatmeal but in my opinion, it's a lot better.
Coarse ground corn meals, similiar to polenta, but as the name implies, 'grittier'
Calvin - Grits grow on a Grit Tree. They are very common in the Deep South. They are harvested in the fall after the lovely white blossoms fall from the trees.
Yeah. Just like when I was in Scotland, our host tried to convince us that haggis came from some furry little animal called the "haggi."
Here is a definition that I found:
Usually a breakfast item in the US Southern region. Made from the kernel of corn. When corn has been soaked in lye and the casing has been removed it becomes Hominy. The lye is rinsed out very well and the corn is left to harden. Then the swollen hominy is ground up to the texture of tiny pellets. When boiled with water, milk and butter it becomes a cereal similar to cream of wheat. It's used as a side dish for a good old fashioned Southern breakfast.
Haggis: Ground oats mixed with caramelized onions and lard or suet, before stuffed into the cleaned bladder or stomach of a sheep or big, and then boiled.
And it's even better with cheese and crumbled bacon pieces in it. Geez, I really want some now!
oh, grits, hominy, cracked corn...whatever! Southern cooking is the best.
I just love grits with a little butter. Cheese is good, too, though!

Do they deliver to Manhattan?
I've recently discovered that Trader Joe's has a gallon jug of unsweetened tea, but who drinks that? I want the good stuff.
Born and raised in Texas, though I spent age 2 - 5 in Ohio and junior high in California.
Blue Bell is the best ice cream in the world!
I am also a Cheerwine addict. Sometimes I order it off their website when I need a fix.
Okay sorry, but what is Chick-Fil-A ?

I do not know this cheerwine. But I do know box wine.
Have you ever had a chicken sandwich (Chicken breast is fried)? CHICK-FIL-A was the ones that created that. They sell Chicken nuggets, Chicken strips, Grilled chicken sandwiches, Chicken salads, etc. They are great!

Their specialty is chicken sandwiches that are really delicious. I keep hoping someone will open one in Grand Central Station.
Delicious
Chik-Fil-A is amazing. They are the best chicken sandwich you will ever eat.
Cheerwine is not ACTUAL wine. It is a soda drink.
Who remembers Sandi Patti singing their jingle?
"If you wanna lose the fast food blues, it's Chick-Fil-A, Chick-Fil-A..."
I grew up in Georgia. Since moving to New York the only things I really miss from the South are Cheerwine and Chick-fil-a.
