The movie opened last weekend in Australia, saw it tonight. I must say I hated the reboot, so was not really looking forward to this. How wrong I was! Had me on the edge of my seat, a great use of 3D ( finally ) a really great story ( a sequal of sorts tto The Wrath of Khan ) thrilling and a hell of a lot of fun.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it, rosscoe. I'm seeing it tonight. I had heard that the 3D wasn't very impressive since it wasn't filmed in 3D and was converted in post. Although, it has the distinction of being the first movie to have been filmed in IMAX and converted into 3D. A compromise made by Abrams, who wanted to film it in IMAX, and the studio, who wanted 3D. Looking forward to it!

Wildly mixed-positive review from Andrew O'hehir.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

They did the 3D great, had no idea it was laid over after the film was finished!

I cried. I knew it was absolutely stupid to cry while I was doing it since

***SPOILER***

Obviously Kirk wasn't going to die. But I cried which makes me think that there's seriously something wrong with me. I mean, I cried at a Tampax commercial once, I think.

I saw it today and really enjoyed it myself.

I was kind of surprised by the number of people in the theatre who were shocked by the "surprise". I'm talking audible shock.

I'm not even a Trekkie and I figured it out in the trailer.

Saw it last night and thought it was quite good.

And while the action climax wasn't as exciting as it might have been (and the movie seems to end rather abruptly), that big emotional scene between Kirk and Spock was well done. Superior dialog for that genre of film--snappy, smart, funny. Love the Kirk-Spock relationship.

It was a decent action sci-fi flick.

It was not a good Star Trek movie.

Saw it late last night and thought it was the best Star Trek movie yet. I loved the numerous subtle (and not so subtle) call backs throughout the movie to the previous Trek franchise. The actors have all done a fantastic job of taking on the spirit of their predecessors without imitating them. My wife and I are already calling it the best movie of the summer.

Does it work as a stand alone movie, for someone familiar with the major Star Trek characters, but hasn't seen the previous movie?

i agree with good sci fi flick, but i do not see the second coming here.

*spoilers*

if a good sci fi action flick was what they wanted, they would have been better off doing the planet destroyer bit and just having a special effects bonanza.

cumberbatch was wasted as khan. as written, the character is just another "psychotic genius who is 523 steps ahead of the protagonists" type that hollywood is so in love with now. one of the key elements that montalban created for khan was his charming, erudite nature. you could see how he could sell snake oil to the masses with his charisma, without the need for brute force. cumberbatch's khan is one cold fish and i would know to stay well away from him and trust him no further than i could throw him.

the interaction between spock and kirk only makes sense if you assume that this is "kirk and spock" in the sense of the TV series and movies, where they have had a long standing friendship over many adventures. but this is a reboot--they haven't had time to develop that relationship yet, and they are clearly demonstrated as still being frenemies by the mid-point of the film. yet spock goes into a homicidal rage? this makes his relationship with uhura even MORE superfluous--she's completely right, he doesn't come close to generating that much feeling for her, and they're supposed to be a couple! in fact, it WOULD be MUCH more creative and innovative and daring if kirk and spock were allowed to have that kind of relationship!

lastly, much of the appeal of "wrath of khan" was that, despite the fact that kirk is inferior to khan and the enterprise was crippled, he was able to defeat him in a game of wits. there's none of that here. and it was a gigantic rip off to have the final confrontation be a fist fight on flying cars when there are two huge space ships facing off.

I saw it this morning in 3D IMAX and thought it was awesome. I love the casting and dialogue, and the 3D effects were so cool on the huge screen.

Between Stories We Tell and Star Trek, this has been a fantastic weekend to go to the movies.

Finally saw it over the weekend. I went to a 10:30pm showing and I wish I'd gone to a later one. I couldn't believe the number of little kids going into the movies. Is there no such thing as a bedtime these days?

I'm not a Trekkie and don't know as much about the back stories as others do. I saw the first one because I'll see Karl Urban in anything. I loved that movie.

Now, I haven't seen "Wrath of Kahn" in about twenty years or so. But when that scene came up in this film I was immediately reminded of "WoK" I'm glad I had that memory because the scene had more of an impact for me.

I know some people were upset about the use of Kahn and called using villains from the original timeline "lazy storytelling" but I don't mind it. Maybe it's because I'm not so devoted to the original but I can understand that even though the timeline changed the characters did not. Kahn and others like him still exist in this world. They may just be different.

And, this movie made me want to go back and watch everything that came before.

I think Zachary "Louis Ironson/Tom Wingfield" Quinto walks off with the movie. He's so great. I think there are a couple elements in this one that will not make any sense if you haven't seen the previous film.

Things I loved to learn:

In 250 years, people will still be using colloquialisms like, "Spock, you got this."

There will have been no new music that speaks to Kirk's rebellious spirit like The Beastie Boys (in both movies).

I have kind of a crush on Bones.

Now they can finally begin their five-year adventure.

I saw it on Saturday and I really enjoyed it. The acting was excellent especially Pine's and Quinto's. Admiral Pike's death was sad. I'm glad Paramount created this new film series for people who were born in the 80's and 90's and never saw the original films or TV shows.

I was spending Memorial Day with my father and family. He turned to me and said that he wanted to see the new Star Trek movie, neither of us had seen the 2009 reboot so we watched that on demand that morning and last night went to see Into Darkness.

I loved how they were both very engaging films. Normally, I'd see an action movie these days and they are two hours long and sometimes feel longer. I fel that with both movies, they were so engaging that time flew by.

I like how they continued with the alternate universe set up that they did with the first movie. There was a small moment in Into Darkness, that continues with that and you may be a little bit lost by that if you hadn't seen the 2009 film. Other than that, it did a great job of standing alone as its own film. And, it was in the same vein as the TV show in that each episode (or in this case, movie) stood as its own story.
