re: Star Wars: Episode III

I agree to that in regards to the prequels, but I think the character development in the original trilogy was fabulous. It was funny and the characters were natural and likeable. :)

re: Star Wars: Episode III

Yes but the Episode Four was directed before Lucas lost it, he was still in fine American Graffiti form. But he did not write the story or direct again until Episode One.
I was really kind of hoping they would bring in the writer and director of The Empire Strikes Back for this film, since they are the two that are most closely matched.
I'm still thinking there is a good chance Revenge of the Sith will make up for the last two's shortcomings.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

Most critics say the script at some times will still make you wince, but some go as far to say its the third best, better than Return of the Jedi.

I'd love to see it be that good! It certainly looks promising.

re: Star Wars: Episode III

Darth Varley informs me that there are even some fans (who have seen screenings due to being press--lucky mofos!) that feel it is as good ESB, if not better. THAT is some feat.

I am sooooo excited. I don't think I can possibly wait until Wednesday night. I just don't think that is going to be possible!!!!

You two boys!!! Behave! re: Star Wars: Episode III

To pick up on a point made earlier, I read a very interesting interview with Ian McDiarmid who tried to explain the criticism that Hayden and Natalie received for Episode II and I believe he made a few good points.

Although I really like Hayden as an actor and thought he did an incredible job in Shattered Glass and A Life As A House I didn't think Episode II was his strongest performance. However, Ian McDiarmid mentioned in this interview how annoying he (Ian) found the constant bashing Hayden (and Natalie) got for their performances and he figured that people misinterpreted the performances since everyone already expected Anakin to be a bad ass and not an arrogant, sulking teenager which wouldn't have made any sense. He also mentioned that people expected to like Anakin but ended up hating him, Ian was convinced that this is actually a good thing.

I have read quite a few reviews for Episode III already and as jrb mentioned, they have been very promising. But again, reviewers have mentioned how terrible the dialogue between Hayden and Natlie is once again. Thankfully, this time they realized it is not their fault but Lucas'.

Several reviews have mentioned how the audience started to literally laugh when Padme tells Anakin 'Hold me, Anakin. Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo'.
Hopefully this time around people realize it's not the actors who are responible for this dialogue. re: Star Wars: Episode III

And like others, I believe I will explode and not make it to Wednesday. I am THAT excited!

re: Star Wars: Episode III

I'm kinda confused, in my newspaper they gave me times for Star Wars in a town with a not-so busy theatre, but the really commercial movie theatre doesn't have it showing yet...?

QM- maybe Ian is on to something. Perhaps it is that I just didn't understand the character of Anakin. But, 2 points 1.) if a lot of people didn't understand the character, isn't that sort of a bad omen and 2.) do you remember that scene in episode 2 where he was getting all upset and he was saying "I killed them, I killed them all. Even the women and the children"? How was that supposed to be like because I didn't mind his acting until that part...

Thanks for the article QM, this one does sound a lot better than the other 2, now I'm getting into the star Wars fever and I'm not even that big of a fan. YAY

ok trying to be all cool and calm, but my inner geek is freaking out. The best way to handle this is to feed it so I've been watching the original trilogy since I got home

re: Star Wars: Episode III

SallyBrown, I think Ian McDiarmid was just trying to say that people were expecting Anakin to be a mean, horrifying, young man immediately whereas Lucas decided that it was a long journey for Anakin to become Darth Vader. Although we already saw some darkness in his character in Episode II Anakin was really just a whiney, annoying, arrogant teenager becuase that was how he was meant to be at that age.
I know that Hayden Christensen keeps mentioning that he already wanted to play Anakin a lot darker and less whiney in Episode II but he was asked to hold back because these characteristics were yet to come.
Ian mentioned in his interview that he personally felt that Hayden succeeded with his portrayal as Anakin because people should have felt Anakin was that annoying and that whiney etc.

By the way, I do recall the scene in Episode II you are referring to and I definitely see your point (having mentioned in my earlier post that Episode II was not Hayden Christensen's strongest performance). However, I felt he portrayed the sulking, whiney, annoying, young Anakin he was supposed to play very well in that scene, although like everyone else I would have prefered him to be 'darker' in that scene.

What do I know? Maybe I'm just very biased because I enjoyed Hayden's work so much in other movies. I hope he gets to prove a few people wrong in Episode III. re: Star Wars: Episode III

And Fabala, it's only 5 more sleeps for some!!! Or 6 days to May 19th, not 7!!! re: Star Wars: Episode III

re: Star Wars: Episode III

Being there waaaaaay back in 77' before all the hype, sitting in that little movie theater with my Dad as lights dimmed, John Williams' iconic score filled the room and the title scrolled STAR WARS (this was before it was A NEW HOPE) is one of my fondest memories, everybody in that building knew things had changed, culture had shifted (for good or bad-who knows) and lot's of people's day dreams and fantasies came vividly true on the big screen.

It was before home video recoders, MTV, the internet but somehow the spell was cast, that film stayed in the theater's all summer long, into the fall and winter months, always number one at the box office, again this was before Monday morning recaps of the grosses, you just knew it "ruled the galaxy".

Being part of that community gathering was magic, being able to walk with my friends a few short blocks to "A Galaxy Far,Far Away" was a constant (nearly daily) thrill...and Right Said Rick and I saw it MANY times after it moved to the dollar cinema..I am hoping to share that joy again with him , but most of all I'm looking forward to seeing REVENGE with my Dad, who never quite understood my manic glee for Darth Vader yet always supported my twisted geek passion, even driving me to all the toys stores for the latest SW booty! He never questioned my insanity, just sighed and smiled, knowing he had a son who would always be different, but confident thanks to his gentle and loving guidence...

Yeah, I'm most excited to be able to sit next to my Father and watch the "circle become complete".. but this time I'M buying the popcorn!

re: Star Wars: Episode III

Damn it, why won't you marry me Eddie Varley?

I also remember a tiny little theater, but in a sleepy, one-light Southern mountain town. Only it wasn't my dad sitting next to me it was my best college friend, Howard who actually cried a tear as those magical words started scrolling. Now his 19 year old son sits between us and we make him buy us the popcorn.

re: Star Wars: Episode III

Good for you, Beav!

Count me among those in '77 who had a life-altering experience - 12 times the openning week! As a young gay teen feeling suffocated by an overly oppressive conservative household and environment, Luke's yearning to escape and be free resonated DEEPLY within me. That shot of him staring at the setting twin suns is seared into my head and heart for the rest of my life.

On a side note, it absolutely CONFIRMED that I was gay, cause that blonde cutie was the be-all and end-all for some time - well, until I grew up a little bit and really noticed Mr. Ford re: Star Wars: Episode III

I was 2 years old (nearly 3) when the A New Hope premiered. But I have these dreamlike memories of having seen it at a drive in.

These films definitely had a huge impact on my life.
