Hah, Dollypop,

I am humbled by the hounour. However there are several here who would like it to be more than "honorary" so i have to be careful :P

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

Well clearly, I am gay - it's not as if I'm opposed to gay people. I just don't see why people need to celebrate being gay. It wouldn't be such an issue if certain gay people wouldn't define themselves by it. Last summer I happened to be out on gay pride and walked past a segment of the celebrations - inadvertantly - and was immediately groped, followed, hit on, and fondled by DOZENS of nearly naked, methed-up men. Way to but into the stereotype even more, guys...

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

well now, munk, I don't think anyone would agree that what you just described is what the gay pride parade/festivals are all about.

Parades for minorities are about two things:

1. remembering the history of oppression and fighting current civil rights issues and prejudices.

2. reminding people to have pride in who they are--even though it is not the "norm"

With issues of the closet/coming out, rejection by friends or family, gay bashing, or lacking equal rights in this country, it IS necessary to have the pride parade, even if not all members of that community see the why.

And, after everything Bush and Co. have done to gays in the past few years, I am astonished that one must defend the need for a pride parade--especially to another homosexual.

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

I'm guilty, I'm a complete fag hag. Im straight, but I love all of my friends. My friends dont really celebrated being gay, they just are, and hold their heads up high, and I respect them for that. But I've gone to GP parades and they were fun. Especially watching them do Drag! hahaha

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

A friend of mine (who is Gay) was in NYC on Sunday. I (me, the token straight guy) had to tell him it was Pride, cause he didn't know.. is that odd?

not at all, ontheaisle ... in fact, i imagine MOST gay men live ordinary lives and don't give a hoot about pride week or care to keep up with it.

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

Makes sense... I'm much more in tune to the whole thing since I started coming here... plus I'm the big "keeper of all things related to any and all holidays" in my family, so I'm probably more tuned in (just a theory).

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

I still don't understand the need for it - just like I don't see the need for the Puerto Rican Day parade.

You're astonished that one must defend the need for a parade?

I have a problem with this statement, my dear JRB.

You're not defending anything. I just asked a question about why people thought it necessary. Don't be so dramatic.

Secondly, "defend the need?" This is implying that the parade is absolutely essential. Of course, we all know that it's not. I just don't understand - for the life of me - why so many gay people feel the need to have a parade because they're gay. Okay, you've struggled in the past - every "minority" group has constant struggles - but you don't need a damn celebration to show that you've overcome "things." Just move on.

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

If I didn't read this message board, I wouldn't have had any idea that it was Gay Pride day, weekend, whatever.

How quickly people forget the mistakes of the past...the parade is a celebration. 50 years ago, you couldn't walk down the street holding hands with a boyfriend, Munk. You can barely do it now.
Raising awareness and acceptance of the diversity of people in the homosexual community is part of what the parade is about.
from the (Crazy to some) transsexuals and drag queens to leather daddies to dykes on bikes and right on down to those sweet married men and women with children...the homosexual community has them all.
I realize that my description of the gay pride parade could also describe a march of Republicans, but surely you see the point.
There will be a need for this parade until people can stop pointing fingers with prejudicial leanings and forget that we're living in a democracy, not a religious theocracy and stop persecuting people simply because they disagree with a lifestyle that has absolutely no physical bearing on their lives.

Parades celebrating someone's heritage are a completely different matter. Unnecessary? Of course they are...but, at the same time, what's so wrong with being proud of who/what you are?
So Puerto Ricans want to celebrate. Let them. So the Irish want to celebrate. Let them. It's a big city, it's not too hard to avoid a parade.

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

Well, I guess you guys are just cooler cuz you didn't know/care about pride.

Do you really think the struggles are over, munk? Is everything A-OK in the ol USA? When things are--then I will not feel the need to stand up and be heard and make statements and fight. But, even then, there will be gay pride parades--to honor that history that you seem to have no comprehension and/or respect for--otherwise you wouldn't dismiss it so blaselike. Maybe you haven't had to struggle. Maybe you don't care about the rights you don't have.

And why is it a bad thing for people to get out and be heard? To remember the bad of history, to celebrate the successes, to fight the current ills, etc.?

Do you have the same problems with

MLK parades?

St. Patrick's Day parades?

Latino Heritage parades?

Macy's Thanksgiving Day parades?

I purposely mixed in the last one as an example of a parade that is just there for fun.

I wouldn't consider my lack of Gay Pride Parade knowledge, cool. Quite the opposite, in fact.

re: Straight support for Gay Pride!

So I guess it is confession time on my part. I grew up in a small town where there was one person of minorority in my high school. It was a very sheltered and yes redneck area. I was raised that homosexuality was not just wrong but it was gross, sinful, evil, etc... As a child/young teen I bought into it because it was all I was ever exposed to.
When I got to college and expecially after coming on to BWW my opinion completely changed. I look back to the town I grew up in and at myself as a child and I feel really bad for everyone there. There is no difference at all, there is nothing wrong with loving someone else be they male or female. I say that love is amazing in all forms and I now have a lot of gay/lesibian friends on here and in the "real world" and I am a better person for it. Happy Gay pride week to everyone and remember to hold your head up high. I have the utmost respect and love for all of you.
