Colleges like to add on a lot of fees for different things. I remember having to pay some transportation fee at my school because I was a full time student and lived on campus. Basically, it was for the bus that went between the school and the off campus apartments that the university owned. I never used it ever. I also think some people who lived in those apartments didn't use it either.

So yeah, the tuition could be about $22,000 per semester, but it doesn't take extra fees into account.

As you all know, my son goes to NYU and is graduating this May. Because he did so well in high school, he did get some good scholarships but also has student loans and we have some Parent loans. He has been an RA for the last two years and so he gets free room and board. However, the RA duties- he takes very seriously and it's his job at school. With his major, he barely has time for anything. He knows when he graduates, he cannot afford to live in Manhattan or even near his schoo and knows that we will not be able to financially support him.

The last few years, the cost to attend NYU has gone from about $66,000 a year to around $69,000 today. That does not include travel expenses. He came home for Winter Break after almost an entire year of being gone. The first thing he said was that our family room looked so big to him- he has spent the last year in a very small dorm room.

I will say that he has never complained about anything and has been so grateful for the opportunity to go to school and live in New York. He has been very frugal with how he spends his money and always asks for permission if he needs to make a purchase. I just wanted to share this with you because not all kids are this entitled. My son works really hard and is a straight A student because he works hard. He started working to get into NYU since his first visit to NY when he was in the 6th grade.

Having said this, I worry every night about how he is gonna make it in NY but he must give it a go. I have to trust that everything he has done thus far will prepare him more. Sorry for the long message and the bragging but thanks for indulging me! :)

Supportivemom, having met your son and after talking with him and seeing how seriously he takes what he is doing, I seriously don't think he will have a problem surviving in NYC after graduation. It very well mean tightening the belt for a year or three but for what he dreams, NYC is the place to be.
