so, if you don't wanna pay 2 bucks to go from 42nd to 14th, WALK OR TAKE A TAXI, one is free, one will cost you more than 2 dollars.

A friend's 18 year old son got a summons/fine one evening this past weekend for walking between subway cars while the train was moving. He got on the train and, when he realized the car was not air conditioned (and it was about 95 degrees outside), he, and a bunch of people ahead of him, and a bunch behind him, moved from one car to another. A plain-clothes police officer singled him out, escorted him out of the train at the next stop, and issued him a summons. I think the officer was hoping to find evidence of other wrongdoing, but had to settle for just the fine. All in all, it was a pretty maddening and frightening experience, not to mention an eye opening one.

Getting singled out and reprimanded for doing what others get away with?

Wow- then let's privatize it and raise the prices to 5 or 6 bucks a pop. We'll exploit you pigeons like the oil companies do.

Wait, gotham is middle class? So, you're a self hating member of the middle class? I thought as much as you despise the middle class that you'd have to be a trust fund baby or something. Good lord, seek therapy.

The MTA
Because pain builds character.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Privitization would be better. The MTA is raising the fares again in 2009, yet the service keeps getting worse.

"People actually ride the LA subway? I thought it was just used for filming. "
Now that gas prices are sky high more people do... I've been on the subway/light rail since I was 16 (I'm only 22). I am a big beliver in mass transit. It's green.

goth, you actually pay per ride?
doodle, we will never be killed, because above all, the people pushing their way on do not want to miss their train, and running after the person who whacked them with a bag would require them to do so!

I had a couple of experiences which could be categorized as worse than the usual.
A guy was standing much too close to where I was sitting and I could feel that he was up to no good. I got up and moved, and he followed me. I got up and walked through the car and he followed me. I kept moving until the train stopped and I ran off. It was scary.
Another time I was running to make a train and I guess I cut someone off who was in a bad mood. She found me and stood there staring at me. I just stared back, eyes wider open than hers. It became a staredown. I finally got tired of staring so I got up and walked toward her. I guess she never expected that because she walked away.
These aren't the worst things that happened to me while living in NY though. That's for another thread.

I was on the subway a couple of summers ago. It was hot so I was wearing shorts. This family came on the train with this little dog of theirs. First off dogs aren't allowed on the subway. Secondly, the dog started to hump my leg. He was really going to town on it.

"Doesn't the existance of this inequality OUTRAGE YOU?"
Yes it does. The fact that I have to pay $2 to ride from 42nd Street to 14th Street, while someone else pays $2 to ride from Far Rockaway to 125th Street is robbery.
If you do much travelling, it equalises for you. Sure, one day you might travel two blocks for two bucks, but the next day, you might travel MILES for two bucks. I wish the London Tube were more like that; it's £1.50 ($3) to go a short distance, and increases the further you go. Booo! They do have the flat fare for buses though, which I like. Although now Boris in charge, I imagine some devastating changes are in store. Boris DOES like making idiotic TFL decisions. XP

"The Paris Metro is the best."
As long as you speak flawless French.
Germany has a nice design where you don't enter and exit in the same direction. I wish New York had designed their system to have separate entrance and exit points. Plus they don't have a turnstile, so it's possible to just get on the train and take your chances.

After you ride the NYC system for a length of time, your attitude may change drastically.

I rather enjoy the NYC Subway. Yes there are inconveniences, especially on the weekend it more than serves its purpose.

Funny London tube story...
I'm in London with a friend, riding the tube at night. We're commenting on how clean the cars are, how nice the stations are, and how much better the tube is than the subway in NY. We get ready to exit the car when our stop comes, and of course right on the platform is a bum who times his projective vomit for when we are RIGHT next to him. We got sprayed - it was awful.
I guess we cursed ourselves by talking about how nice it was!

I can't speak from personal experience but a NY friend who travels often insists that Hong Kong has the best public transportation of any major city. This includes their subways and bus system.
We have the pretty Metro system in DC which looks nice but doesn't go to too many places or run very often. NY's MTA doesn't look as good but it seems to go just about everywhere and runs all the time. (I like your way better.) My worst NY subway experience involved getting on an express train by mistake. I believe I ended up somewhere in Queens but it felt like I was traveling so long that I must have been in Connecticut. To tell you the truth - time wasn't a problem that day and I enjoyed the 'tour'.

I've seen many folks carrying a large purse or basket on their laps and suddenly seen a little puppy peeking out over the top. They aren't allowed here either (except for service animals) but I love seeing them on your system!
