America Ferrera? -not sure if she'd be considered 'of size.'
And I know some people I named- Sara Rue, etc.- are no longer 'of size,' but I remember for Sara especially when her show first came on the air I read more about "OMG she's a size 10/ size 12 (whatever her size was) and she's got her own show" than I read about the actual show itself, so she was of size at the time she was getting all this success.

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought to myself "Marie Dressler is the perfect example". I wondered if anyone would have mentioned her. Opened the thread and three people mentioned her. It is one of the reasons I love this place.
Anyway, Dressler would be a perfect choice. She was the #1 box office star in the age of the glamorous movie star.
I love Kathy Bates -- and not just because she's my Mexican equivalent mamá.

"Kathy Bates" - Stagemanager
3 words.......MEN DON'T LEAVE!! What a performance!!
I vaguely remember watching that way back when. I should definitely check it out. Thanks, Ciaron.

Stage I dont know if you live in the city but it was being shown on TIme Warner Cable a lot in the summer. It isnt a perfect film but I really like her playing a mother to young children. She carries the film. A great performance.
Ciaron: Maybe I'm confused, and please feel free to correct me on my correction, but I believe Kathy had a supporting part in Men don't Leave as Jessica Langes boss. Are you thinking of Home of Our Own (or a title like that)?
Yeah, I remember Lange being in it. Isn't MEN DON'T LEAVE the one with Chris O'Donnell and his little brother runs away?

Home of Our Own

In that case, I've never seen it.

And, of course, Men Don't Leave has more stellar work from Joan Cusack as well.
Yes, Sara was heavy when she started, which was LONG before she had her own show. And America Ferrara definitely counts - remember her breakout role in Real Women Have Curves? She made quite a splash and there was a lot of (positive) talk about her being a heavier girl.
Again, Shelly Winters, Kathy Bates, Kirstie Alley, Delta Burke, etc., so many of these women were not heavy when they found success - their bodies changed later, when they already had a career.
In the same vein, Sally Struthers. And what about Debra Monk? We think of her as a Broadway performer, but she does quite a bit of film and TV, and has an Emmy to go with her Tony.
SweetQ---You made my day posting that picture of the "Two Fat Ladies."
I LOVED their show! ...And I miss Jennifer.

GILMORE GIRLS features Melissa McCarthy (Sookie) and the "used-to-be-thin" Sally Struthers and Liz Torres.
Rathy---Even your own lovely Deborah Monk was not a "big" girl when she starred in (and co-created) Pump Boys & Dinettes. Her career got big first, before the rest of her did, if you will.
That's why I put her in the category with Struthers, Burke, etc., darling.
Oh! I thought you were shifting gears back to the topic for that last part. Sorry!
No worries!
