"PP's own numbers read from 3-10%. Not 10%."
Not according to Factcheck.org:
"Another way to measure the group’s abortion services, however, is to divide the total number of abortions by the number of clients. For example, Planned Parenthood said that it “provided nearly 11.4 million medical services for 3 million people” in 2009. Its 2011 fact sheet says it performed 332,278 abortion procedures in 2009. That would mean that roughly one out of every 10 clients received an abortion."

Sorry, when you said Planned Parenthood's numbers, I thought you meant Planned Parenthood's numbers, not a conclusion that someone else has come to. As far as I'm concerned, it's a moot point, anyway. Call it 10% - hell, call it 50%. What of it?

I got to work tonight and found out that the person I am working with spent all day at the local PP center in downtown LA. She sat me down and told me all about the wonderful services they provide as well as talking about the thin lipped, Karen Handel and this false investigation that will lead to nothing. She had some business cards from the woman who heads up Volunteer Services. Well, after hearing what I’ve heard all morning, I grabbed a card and will be calling to volunteer my time. I have to get out and do what I can.
I’m getting sick and tired of the assholes winning.

Posted: 2/2/12 at 6:12amIf PP provided 11 million services and 330,000 of those were abortions, where do you get 10%? The discussion was not how many people had abortions, but the percentage of their services that were something OTHER than abortions. Of course women get multiple services if they are available.. Some may have even had more than one abortion in a year. Who knows? Who cares? Planned Parenthood is an excellent organization. Drop the convenient fuzzy math.

Posted: 2/2/12 at 9:04amWhen I was 16 my best friend got pregnant. Not knowing really what to do, we took her to PP. They were fantastic. Very caring, nurturing and comforting. Ultimately, my friend did have an abortion but the PP people discussed ALL the options with her a few times. I've supported them ever since.

Posted: 2/2/12 at 9:44amI just wish the supposedly 'pro-life' people would act pro-life. Reality shows that education and healthcare to everyone, but especially the young and the poor, decreases the number of abortions. But the far-right extremists choose to embrace ignorance, which is bad enougn, but they want to force others to live under ignorance as well.

PP received $650,000 in donations yesterday, which is almost enough to cover the money that was withdrawn by Komen "for the Cure." The received 6,000 online donations yesterday (their usual average is 100-200 per day).

More on the decision being political decision, not motivated by anything other than the intent to target PP.

Posted: 2/2/12 at 10:48amI wonder what would happen if someone were to "investigate" the Susan G. Komen Foundation? I work at a non-profit- we get "investigated" all the time. And that by-law is extremely broad- as I read it, if a cop stops by a local Susan G. Komen event to ask a few questions, they'd have to stop funding themselves.

Again, a link to Politico, which ordinarily skews to the right. They put the question to their "Arena," their daily debate with policymakers from both parties.
The question posed: "Was it wise for Susan G. Komen to make this move due to the congressional investigation? Or is it a dangerous idea to toy with women’s health?"
Only one pundit sent in an answer supporting Komen. The rest were critical. And, again, this is a website that usually skews to the right.
Democratic consultant John Anzalone points out that the Komen policy of denying funding to any organization "under investigation" is itself essentially flawed, because "being under investigation is not being found guilty."
And Peter Fenn, another Democrat, says, "This is a disaster for Komen. They have ruined a brand that took a quarter century to build up in less than 24 hours."

Posted: 2/2/12 at 12:14pmInteresting, I don't think Politico skews to the right; I find them pretty fair. But anyway, their Arena page generally has opinions from folks on both sides of the aisle. And your pull-quote from Peter Fenn sums it up about right.

I'm not turning my back on them.
It was a decision that will surely be debated for a long time, but what matters to me is the work that they do, the work that needs to be done, and the difference that they make.
On balance, for me, what they do for good outweighs the bad.
I still support them. And will help them through this difficult time.

Komen lost my support when the story broke of them using donor dollars to sue other charities for using the word "cure". Not to mention their Race for the Cure events run at about an 8 million dollar loss.
This recent blunder is inexcusable though. I don't know how denying women life saving cancer screenings fits into being "pro life."
There are plenty of other charities out there with the same mission that are way more deserving of my money than the Komen foundation.
Komen Foundation uses donations to sue other charities that use the word "Cure".

It appears this new rule about not funding organizations under investigation ONLY applies to Planned Parenthood. Komen also funds a health clinic at Penn State to the tune of 7.5 million dollars.

Well, after almost 3 pages, I fixed the title.
Susan G. Komen. DOH!
And, all 7 California affiliates have come out against the decision.
"Komen volunteers have worked tirelessly for the past 30 years to increase awareness, screening and research for the cure. What we have experienced and witnessed over the last two days is an extraordinary level of passion for these important issues to women. Our commitment to our mission is unwavering. This is a misstep in that journey and we want to assure all Californians that we will do whatever it takes to do what is right for the health of women and men in California."

HuffingtonPost: Susan G. Komen Top Officials Resign As Backlash Gains Steam
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/02/susan-g-komen_n_1250651.html
===============
Dr. Kathy Plesser, a Manhattan radiologist on the medical advisory board of Susan G. Komen for the Cure's New York chapter, said she plans to resign from her position unless Komen reverses its decision to pull grant money from Planned Parenthood.
"I'm a physician and my interest is women's health, and I am disturbed by Komen's decision because I am a very strong advocate for serving under-served women," Plesser told The Huffington Post. "Eliminating this funding will mean there's no place for these women to go. Where are these women to go to have a mammography? Do they not deserve to have mammography?"
With her decision, Plesser joins Komen's top public health official, Mollie Williams, and the executive director of Komen's Los Angeles County chapter, Deb Anthony, both of whom also resigned in protest.

Posted: 2/3/12 at 6:42amI find it remarkable that the GOP has been attacking Planned Parenthood for over a year now, at both the state and federal level, and no one seems to have noticed. It has taken a decision by a private organization to gets people's attention.
