Sen Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, has been indicted on corruption charges, CBS News has learned.
The FBI, working with an Alaska oil contractor, secretly taped telephone calls with Sen. Ted Stevens as part of a public corruption sting it was reported late last year, according to people close to the investigation.
The secret recordings suggest the Justice Department was eyeing Stevens long before June 2007, when the Republican senator first publicly acknowledged he was under scrutiny. At that time, it appeared Stevens was a new focus in a case that had already ensnared several state lawmakers.
The recorded calls between Stevens and businessman Bill Allen were confirmed by two people close to the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way. They declined to say how many calls were recorded or what was said.

For those of you not familiar with the career of the Senate's longest serving Republican:
Ted Stevens has taken criticism for a wide variety of positions and actions taken in the Senate. This includes placing a secret hold on a bill that would allow easier accountability and research of all federal funding measures, describing the Internet as a "series of tubes", and supporting perceived pork barrel projects such as the Gravina Island Bridge and the Knik Arm Bridge (collectively known as the "Bridges to Nowhere" by their opponents). He threatened to resign from the Senate if Congress targeted Alaska's annual transportation funds to help repair Louisiana in the wake of Hurricane Katrina damage. The funding in consideration would have been redirected from funds restricted by Congress for Alaskan bridges. Citizens Against Government Waste is a frequent critic of Stevens' affinity for pork and keeps a list of his projects.

Ahh ok, so yeah, no surprise that he's a corrupt scumbag.
good riddance to bad rubbish.

Ok, but its not the RNC that's getting rid of him, its the FBI, so are the RNC still not getting a penny?
not a cent.
my responses to their letters of late (actually since mid-2006) usually begin with "dear dumbasses."

I'm surprised this happened, actually. Wasn't Stevens one of the goofuses that they were protecting with the federal prosecutors fooforall?
Yeah. But that thing with the prosecutors didn't turn out so good for the Republicans.
In fact, nothing has really turned out too good for the Republicans since the Berlin Wall fell.

I don't know about that. They stole the election in 2000, started a war guaranteed to keep them all healthy wealthy and wealthier for the foreseeable future, have loaded the Supreme Court and generally helped demolish government oversight of their business dealings. They've gotten exactly what they want, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
yeah, i was gonna say, other than '06, it's been a pretty doggone good ride considering that the berlin wall fell in '89.

Back to this dipsh*t Stevens--
Dear boy Ted is running for reelection against a strong opponent.
Our man Ted also has a well financed primary opponent.
Do you think Gimme Ted will withdraw from the primary or go down in flames either in the primary or the general election?
Or win the primary and the general election?
Discuss.
[My hunch is Teddy Weddy will win the primary and lose the election, but possibly he could piss off so many voters in Alaska that it could, just maybe, go for Obama also. Alaska has not gone for a Democratic presidential candidate since LBJ in 1964.]
vickers will win the primary and probably pull out a narrow general election win. unless he's been f*cking seals.
Chance, yes this is the "internet is a series of tubes guy". I still crack up when I think about the diagram that The Daily Show designed for this quote.

Republican senators, McCain, and the RNC are now trying to decide what to do with the now-tainted-money they've received from Stevens' PAC. Some sentors have donated the money. Others, McCain, and the RNC have not decided yet.

Just asking:
Did Senator Stevens declare this two hundred fifty grand on his tax forms as income which it most certainly is?
I have heard nary a peep about this possibility, one way or the other.
