What a Review!
"I'm going to speak plainly in a language everyone can understand. M. Night Shyamalan's THE LAST AIRBENDER is a hate crime against film lovers. No one should ever have to endure what I was unexpectedly put through yesterday afternoon watching this murky 3-D $hit$torm of a movie that appears to have been shot through unflushed toilet bowl water, which, upon reflection, seems 100 percent appropriate."
What a great opening to a nasty review. This film looks terrible. One of the biggest mysteries out there is how does M. Night Shyamalan find work? Why do people give this guy money to make movies?

Anyone else hear "airbender" and think "fart"?
Just yours are airbenders, Reg!
While this film looks terrible, that review is just as poorly written.
Roger Ebert begins his review: ""The Last Airbender" is an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented."

I saw it last night with friends (their choice, not mine) and it was truly terrible. Everyone around me, including my friends, seemed to think it was awful.
So many of my friends are just thrilled to the gills about this movie (or the new Twilight movie)... the trailers looked horrible, and the reviews are even worse, so I don't know WHY so many people went and saw it at midnight. But I am so glad that I spent my money on Toy Story 3 instead.
Are we talking Lost Horizon awful?
Looks like we have our first real Razzie contender.

Why would ANYONE spend money to see this after THE HAPPENNING ?
I was hoping this might be good, but then noticed it wasn't being screened for critics which is always the sign of a sh*t sandwich.
As for CG wankery: Anyone see that 5 gum commercial where three people are strapped to futuristic chairs? A giant sci-fi nozzle-thing that looks like it came out of ALIENS comes down and unleashes this oil-like substance that floats in the air and assumes different shapes...an octopus, a pelican...the tagline is "Each person experiences it differently". That is actually the best and most poetic use of CG effects I have seen in YEARS. It's really kind of stunning, even though the commercial itself is a little heavy-handed for a gum advert.
CG is a wonderful tool but I could probably count on one hand the times I have seen it used to create something genuinely resonant and beautiful. CG artists seem to just want the audience to say "Oh, cool!" The problem is...everything we have seen before. CG's coupon for making us say "Cool!" is pretty much expired. Why not use CG to make us say "Ahh!"...to create beauty, to create memorable, even emotional images? And God knows even the best filmmakers are relying on it WAY too much. To the point where its just looking like flat-out laziness.
Catch up with the TV commercials, Hollywood!
What I do not get is his next movie is being shopped around. No one gets to see the script (only serious investors)but its another paranormal/mystery. Look at his track record.
Lady in the Water
The Village
The Happening
How does he get so many people interested in his projects? Considering his financial duds over the past few years how does he suck people in with this hype?He sucks as a writer and as a director.

Schmerg, so many people went at midnight because it's based on a wildly popular (and excellent) anime TV show.
I'm a huge fan of the series, and am heartbroken to read all these reviews... luckily I'll be seeing it outside of NYC and will only need to pay $6. I also won't be seeing it in 3D, thankfully.
I don't get the philosophy of people paying money--any money--for a movie that they know is going to suck. Who says the corporations don't own us?
Generally I don't, but in this case I'll be going just because I'm such a big fan of the show. Though, I'm not sure if I'd pay $12.50 or not. Being out of town definitely helps.
Where in the hell can you still see a movie for $6.50?
Yeah, but WesternSky, if I really loved the anime and I saw all the terrible reviews and terrible trailers, the last thing I'd want to do would be to see the movie!
JerseyGirl2 - Bar Harbor, Maine!
Schmerg, yeah. I really don't have a logical argument as to why I'm going to see it beyond I feel like I should. And... the movie theater serves pizza. So, at least there's that.
The only movie of his that was decent was The Sixth Sense. I can't believe this dude gets all these movies made, when an AMAZING writer/director like Nicole Holofcener (Please Give) has to scrape to get her movies made. UGHH!!!!
Looks like we have our first real Razzie contender.
No, I think the first was Sex and the City 2. This appears to be its biggest competition.
I love Lady in the Water and Sixth Sense. Honestly, I never get tired of watching either. I thought the first half of The Happening was fun, but then it descended into camp and schlock. I enjoyed Signs and The Village. The one I truly hated was Unbreakable, which bored me to tears. I saw the trailer for this and instantly knew I would wait for Netflix.
The theater in my hometown is still $5, and they will deliver your popcorn/candy/HOMEMADE ICE CREAM to your seat before the movie begins. Granted there are only 2 screens and only 3 different movies on the schedule at a time, but it is an amazing place.

the problem with "signs" (and perhaps all his films subsequent to "sixth sense") is that he tried to shoehorn the story into the "twist" (as opposed to "sixth sense," where the "twist" served the story).
i mean, the "signs" lost all credibility to viewers when a race of beings who were presumably smart enough to master intergalactic travel weren't at all prepared for what covered 90% of the surface of the world they were interested in conquering.
i mean, really.
i just got back from it. my god i wanted to just die. or fall asleep....
avoid this film at all costs. please.
Anyone who chooses to sit through an M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie deserves what they get. He made one good movie back in 1999 and studios have never stopped making his movies because of it. Hopefully they will all just collectively decide to put an end to this mans filmmaking.
That's sort of how I feel about Todd Solondz. There was Welcome to the Dollhouse and then...ugh.
I agree 100% Matt. But Todd doesn't have major studios giving him millions of dollars every other year to make another piece of shlt they know is going to bomb.
