...apparently, TJ Maxx just bought up a whole bunch of HBO dvds... at my local store there were, literally, a hundred copies of amazing theatre-related films for $5.99 or less.
ANGELS IN AMERICA (2 discs - I paid like $50 when this came out)
THE LARAMIE PROJECT
THE COMEBACK - complete series (2 discs)
Plus, Bill Maher and Wanda Sykes and the standup specials.'
Lots more.
Check it out if you have a chance.
I picked up a bunch of copies of AiA to give to friends ($5.99 for 6 hours of Al Pacino and Meryl Streep? Who's gonna turn THAT down! Plus, the script ain't so bad either,
)

P.S. The general manager told me all the stores in her region (tri-state area) received big boxes of HBO dvds earlier this week.
Thanks for the heads up Pg.
I don't think our TJ Maxx has DVDs. Boo! I'd grab "Angels in America" in a heartbeat.
So would I, Reg.
Big Lots has gotten the HBO DVDs too. I got Angels in America, Tsunami, The Comeback, several HBO documentarys, Lucky Louie, and a bunch of HBO films for $3 each. HBO must be getting rid of old inventory.
I saw Angels in America Monday at the TJ Maxx here in my little ol' Mississippi town.
well, that does it-I'll have to check out our TJ MAXX toot sweet!
A number of TJ MAXXs have recently been COMPLETELY rennovated from top to bottom to have more the look of Homegoods than a Family Dollar in a rough neighborhood which is what they seemed to look like up until this point. At least around here.
They have expanded their DVD/books/cooking instruction/ electronics departments in most of these new stores.
At mine, which was just rennovated, all the DVDs were on shelves near the new hi-tech robot registers that talk to you and tell you which register to approach,etc..
TJ MAXX is ususally a disaster, depending on the manager, so make sure to ASK if you don't see them. Chances are they have them in the store but haven't put them out or put them out in some random location (speaking of which, if I find one more wine opener in the swimsuit section someone's gonna pay, to the Maxx!).
All this being said, I'm all for keeping store costs low to keep product prices low. But it's nice to feel clean leaving TJs for once.
P
Hi-tech robot registers?
I clearly have not been in T.J. Maxx in a long while.
Jane, let me know what you find. We're talking the 6th Ave and 18th Street, yeah?
Yes we are, Reg!
I'll be the guy in the top hat saying "Get the f*** away from that 'Smoky Joe's Cafe!'"
Heh, I love it! I'll be the embarrassed girl with the old lady shopping cart.
Reg, you can have my copy of Smokey Joe's. I don't care for it.
madbrian - i love your signoff quote. Bea was a true legend in her own time.
I didn't spot any SMOKEY JOE'S at my TJs! I guess I better make a return visit...
I suppose were one of the cashiers named Erica you could always say "Get me f*cking ANGELS IN AMERICA, erica". Not quite the same, though, Reg. is it?

Brian, you're sweet. I actually think someone gave me a copy. I never saw the show.
But it was a good punch line . . .
So I work at Tj Maxx in MA and we dont have any

awesome--i've wanted "Angels in America" for so long.
Picked up "Tracey Takes On" at Big Lots...they seem to specialize in MGM, Sony and Warner movies...picked up Cabaret, Nintochka and Ziegfeld Follies over the weekend.
I'll have to check this out tomorrow.
I've only started going to TJ Maxx in the last couple of years or so I never saw either of the two stores in my area look like dollar stores! LOL
No DVD's at my TJ MAXX
My TJ MAXX must not have been among the ones renovated. It still looks like the bomb dropped and nothing is very well-organized . No HBO DVD's, either. I was quite upset.
Any luck at the Manhattan TJ's? I might swing by today.

If there are any AJ Wright's in your area...they're run by the same company as TJ Maxx but are more, for lack of a better word, urban, check there.
I just picked up "Angels in America" for $4.99...they had one other copy. It was the only HBO-related DVD I saw, though, although they did have "Roots: The Next Generation" for $9.99. Was tempted to pick up "Big Comfy Couch" DVDs for my daughter, but I wasn't sure if the 16-year-old was ready for a blast from that far in the past.
Any luck at the Manhattan TJ's?
Nope.
