Rihanna has done it again! She released a mediocre album with a few good songs on it and the rest all sad sorry excuses for songs. She needs singing lessons badly. The girl couldn't stay on key if her life were hanging in the balance. Why do we have to listen to every song she sings in minor keys because she has a tendency to go flat?
What are some Albums that were released this year which you were very disappointed in? Or other that you were very pleasantly surprised by? Give me your thoughts on this.

C'mon you guys, get off the processed cheese food music and start ingesting something nutritious:
Foster the People, Hooray for Earth, We are Augustines, Death Cab for Cutie, M83, St. Vincent, Cults ... there are really creative people out there doing their thing. Meanwhile, a highlight on NPR this year was a report on NPR about the megacorporation behind Rhianna spending 1 million dollars to make one of her flop singles a hit. Why be a cog in that machinery?

If I wanted to be rude I wold have called you easily placated dweebs suckling at the teat of the entertainment industrial complex. Instead I offered you some pointers on excellent music you haven't heard three million times. Because I care.
Adele.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say about Mika's upcoming album:
The Origin of Love: 20112012
Mika has begun recording his new album. He has stated in numerous interviews that the new album will be more simplistic and less layered than the previous album. Mika announced the title of the album, The Origin of Love in a French interview on 17 June. Mika has said in numerous interviews that he will include a number of French tracks on the album, and has said that the musical style will include elements of Daft Punk and Fleetwood Mac. He describes the album as less child-like and more serious. The first single released from the album is "Elle Me Dit", Mika's first French track. It was released online on 1 July 2011. The album is expected to be released in 2012.
Whatever. I just think he's a freakin' genius. And I like Elle Me Dit. It's very simple and catchy.
Even though my kids, and not I, are their target demographic, I think I've become a giant indie rock/pop cliche - I'm stuck in an endless loop of bands like Beirut, Bon Iver, The National, Arcade Fire, Band of Horses, with some Adele thrown in. That is when I'm not listening the bands/singers of my youth, like Zeppelin, the Dead, The Who, the Stones, The Eagles, Steely Dan, The Sex Pistols, Earth Wind & Fire, Dylan, Neil Young, Lou Reed...which us really where my taste in music stalled.

Jane, I have been working late nights in dance clubs and both the Rhianna singles and the Britney singles sound great blasting over a 95db sound system. It's just so obvious they're factory-assembled, I wouldn't be surprised to find out there are Chinese prisoners assembling the singles, the actual composition and recording, on some giant conveyer belt.
lol, I don't even care how they were produced- I just like the finished product!
Now don't get me wrong, I don't play some loud disco while trying to relax or trying to have a high cultural moment. I save those occasions for doo-wop. Just kidding, um, no not kidding.
While I'm on the subject of doo wop music, those were the days when a lead singer had to SING. Every note was spot on and the voice quality was superb. Male lead singers had strong tenor voices and I don't know which voice the girl groups had but in my opinion, that was singing. And much of it was a cappella.
Frankie Lymon had the best voice in pop. I had a crush on him from his voice alone. He was also kind of cute.
@findingnamo Doesn't the fact that people listen to and pay for albums which as you say are "created on a conveyor belt in asia," say something very sad about our culture as a whole. We would rather pay for mediocrity than strive for excellence. That can be said about a lot of things in our culture.
Lady, I'm not sure if that music is made on a conveyor belt in Asia, and if it is, I'm not sure the music which you like isn't made on the same conveyor belt.
Anyway, that it's mediocre is your opinion. The only reason I'm mentioning it is that if indeed it IS mediocre, then there's nothing wrong with enjoying some mediocrity in life.
I'd be tired of listening to German Lieder for very long. I'd need an ABBA break!
You make a very good point Jane2. I was just stating that much of today's news and music is filled with mediocrity. What every happened to all of the things that made life worth living. Now all we hear about is sex and cursing and drama. What about the wonderful family sitcoms which people used to watch? Now everything is violence and where can we get our next reality television fix. I am a television junkie but some people spend their whole lives sitting in front of the television watching meaningless scripted reality shows. While I was home for this thanksgiving my family members were each in a different room watching the same television programing, not for one hour but for the whole day. Watching a marathon of a very mediocre show. What happened to family and togetherness?
I'm on the same page as you are, Lady. I agree with every sentiment you stated. All I can come up with the satisfy my own wonderment is that it must be a generational issue. Perhaps our parents and grandparents bemoaned the same situations when we were young. But mind you, I really don't believe what I'm saying that it's just an age thing. I'm with you about quality decline in culture and everyday life, really.
It's just so hard to accept, that I try to blame it on my age. It IS very SAD.
