How did any of the teachers not realize that this was a bad idea? Letting the kids believe it was real? Do they have any idea of the emotional scarring they could have/have caused these kids?
What were they thinking?
holy ****

Oh my...
Oh my...
I saw that in the paper the other day. Seriously, what the royal f**k were they thinking? Like the mere thought of being caught in a school shooting isn't terrifying enough? They had to fake an attack and call it a drill? It's going to take them a long time to earn back the trust of these kids and their parents.

On the one hand, yes this was stupid. I mean it really could have backfired badly, and yes the students are traumatized.
However, I remember in High School, I wanted to have a CODE RED drill, so that in the event it DID happen, we might actually be able to protect ourselves. When in a crisis situation, people who normally would function fine, might have panic attacks (I for one am terribly prone to this), and as a future teacher, if I have students who know what to do, then should I start having a panic attack, then there is a better chance of them surviving.
I dunno, my 2 cents.
we used to do lockdown drills in high school.
they would say over the pa "will mr conard please report to the office"
so everyone knew it was a drill and would keep doing what they were doing
and they would announce it a day in advance so if anyone wanted to bring a gun to school and shoot people, they were given the opertunity. x_X
husk_charmer: It sounds like what you had in mind was a situation wherein students were told beforehand that it was a drill. These kids were taken completely by surprise; in fact, according to the article they were expressly told it was the real thing. I think that's going way too far, especially with kids that age.
I think having lockdown drills are good ideas, but the way these teachers handled it was idiotic.
That's just ridiculous...
I read about this two days ago, and was totally floored. This is not right. At the very least parents should have been notified beforehand. It's just wrong.
So now these kids think that this is "normal" for their teachers and what if, God forbid, a real attack happened and the kids didn't take it seriously. The trust that was destroyed in this "drill" is enormous and could have serious repercussions down the road for these kids.
Can you say "Lawsuit?"

that is sick... how would anyone even think it was ok to do that?

Every single teacher and administrator who planned and implemented this "drill" should be fired. If my child were subjected to that, I would want to tear their throats out. I am so disgusted.

What the hell? Didn't those teachers think it was inappropriate to lie to elementary school kids that someone wanted to go after them and SHOOT them?

"poor judgement?"
-No kidding... If my child was in that situation, I would bring legal action against the school. In the very least, my child would be taken out of the school. I understand the need for drills and preparation, but the way this was handled was careless and downright wrong. No child should be subjected to that, esp. at that age. There are so many ways to teach about violence in schools, and they made every wrong choice. I hope the teachers and school officials are held responsible for their actions.
This sounds like something my former high school would do. I hope they don't read this article, I don't want it to give them any ideas...
If the kids were notified that they were going to have a drill, wouldn't they have taken it LESS seriously?
However, the parents at the least should've been notified, especially with events happening today.
